Tbh i think thats how normal bank accounts should be. You can only spend what is already loaded onto them, no going into unauthorised overdrafts and being charged the earth ect.

Dont they charge something like 2% per transaction though?

So, how exactly would you buy a house or decent car? Or say you just finished uni got a job in another city, how would buy all the shiz you need to startup there and get to work for a month before getting paid? Credit and loans are a fundamental part of the economy and although some people can't handle the responsibility that goes with owning credit cards, the rest of us use them quite well thanks.

I use my debit card mostly to pay for everything. Only stuff over 200G BP and business stuff goes on CC.

Credit needs to exist now as for those prepaid cards, nvr used to needed 1 but i don't imagne they would be very good.

I have the talk sport prepaid maestro card. Cheap to load at the post office and it has only been refused in 2 places. Not had any problems with it online for play.com and subbing on wow. The sun newspaper have an affiliated prepaid mastercard which is supposed to be good but i have no experience of it.

Some pre-paid things, works rather well. Don't know about cards.

Pre-paid phoneaccount for example works wonders.

Atleast in finland.

Anyhoo, my bank won't even let me pay most the stuff online, even if it should as there's cash in the bank, but, whadda'ya gonna do.

I suggest paypal or some such, most places accept them and it's easy as pie to do a bank transfer, even from finland to england.

*yawn* the companys that process your transactions can't see how much credit you have, therefore accept it, the bank then has a duty to the people to pay them as you have already recieved the goods.

If people can't keep track of how much money they have then it really is a sorry state of affairs, personally if i'm ever going out to buy something from the shops I look at internet banking before I go, or get a balance slip from a cashpoint.

*yawn* :wanker: And yet a cash machine with a card and a pin number can they could happlily change chip and pin so it got online authorisation as i know my business checks online for the bank to honour the transaction. Banks love people going overdrawn fact it makes a fortune. And if you read i was just pointing out what Sparta said.

No they can't just happily change the machines over too do that, would you want the company you are buying something from to see how much money you have?

I'm sorry there is no justification for not knowing how much money you have in your bank. If you use your card without knowing the balance you should accept the consquences, similar with writing cheques.

And I knew you were quoting him. But you re-made the point, so I quoted you. Jesus, don't take stuff so personally.

Large stores with high turnover such as tesco's for example have an agreement that all card transactions up to a certain value are processed without a check on balance. This is to speed up the process in busy shopping environments. When a balance check is done the cashier does not see how much money you have just an authorised or declined message.

Not gonna get into the whole "hwat should bank thingies do", just gonna comment on that:

Also, if you take a creditcard out on a saturday/sunday, the payments don't process before monday hits. In most banks atleast.

So technically, you could spend a fortune going over in the weekend, and see it only on monday.

I have a card that draws cash from an cashpoint. It works. New age technology, bah, humbug. Old school *nod*

I think he meant something else =) There is nothing bad in taking a credit - it's sometimes even better than paying the full price in one payment, but a credit card encourages people to spend more than they have, whereas a credit for a house/car is harder to get at a bank.

I don't know how it works in England, but I think in Germany you can't pay a 100k € house on loan with a CC ^^
