This is in both of our realms intrest is it not?

To war we go so i can crap upon Arthurs grave in Avalon.

Then i pity you if you dont know the history of your old lord, his body was taken to the isle of Avalon, and it is there he will one again take his rightfull place as the leader of Albion, when he is needed, and the sword excalibur is returned to the lady of the lake.

King Arthur is the figure at the heart of the Arthurian legends. He is a near mythic figure in Celtic stories such as Culhwch and Olwen. In early Latin chronicles he is presented as a military leader, the dux bellorum. "Arthur fought...together with the Kings of the British; but he was Dux Bellorum. (quote from Nennius in "Historia Brittonum")" In later books of romance and heroism he is presented as a mighty king and emperor. One of the questions that has occupied those interested in King Arthur is whether or not he is a historical figure.

Modern scholars have generally assumed that there was some actual person at the heart of the legends, though not of course a king with a band of knights, excaliber, and a wonderful kinddom named Camelot. If there is a historical basis to the character, it is clear that he would have gained fame as a warrior battling the Germanic invaders of the late 5th and early 6th centuries. It is thought that he might have been a great war hero that used his knowledge of cavalry to defeat the Saxons time and again. Arthur is likely to have been a bona fide war hero, a man who led his countrymen to victory time and again. It is certain that the Battle of Badon Hill, wherever and whenever it was, set the Saxon occupation back for a good many years. Whether Arthur fought at the battle is still not proved, but is generally believed.

But what can not be denied is the influence of the figure of Arthur on literature, art, music, and society from the Middle Ages to the present. Though there have been numerous historical novels that try to put Arthur into a 6th century setting, it is the legendary figure of the late Middle Ages who has most captured the imagination. It is great king with the dashing knights, that figures in the major versions of the legend from Malory to Tennyson to T. H. White. Central to the myth is the downfall of Arthur's kingdom, and his ever popular "round table." In many of these tales, particularily with Geoffrey and Malory, Arthur is represented with near unhuman powers and abilities. Upon being fatally wounded in battle, Arthur is carried to the mystical Avalon, apparently the Underworld home of the Celtic god, Afallach. Many legends around the country attest to Arthur's immortality. He sleeps in one of numerous caves waiting to return and lead his people. It is mainly excellent tales and stories like these that make you wonder if he really was man or myth.

Nice post Fafnir, good to hear someone has a genuine interest in that period of history :)

In the 14th century a French cleric was touring England, and while he was visiting a village in the north east he commented to one of the locals that Arthur was a legend and had never existed. This caused a riot and the poor French chap barely escaped with his life ;)

Gombur raises a good question though -- if you think Arthur is so fascinating, why are you hanging out with the trolls ?
