Postcounts

Ok, following on from a discussion in the DAoC forums - why do we have postcounts and ratings? Personally, I quite like having them there. It's a way of seeing who's been in the community for a long time, how often they post and so on, and the bizarre rituals of couch rites, but some people argue that having a post count and rankings only encourage spammers and it should be disabled. Obviously, not really an issue with spammers in this forum because people have more sense than to post farm in these dangerous waters, but it's fairly endemic in the DAoC forums.

So wondered what you guys thought about it?

P.S. Yes, I'm smiting spammers, a couple people have had their postcounts reset and so on, but it's a bit like running around marshland eradicating mozzies. It's tiring and I'm not entirely sure I'm getting anywhere fast.

I think a rank is a good idea, but maybe it should be done on time registered and posts instead of solely one or the other?

Hmmm considering it only seems massively present in the DAOC forums perhaps that's due to the very nature of the game. I.e Levelling up to be the uberlord level 50 that they all seem so congratulatory on. They then bring this same idea to the forums, seeing the postcounts and titles as levels...hell they even say grats and stuff when someone reaches a new postcount title

Either that or they're just retarded :p

Back in the day, postcount was displayed beside name, title, avatar, and all that other stuff. It was removed due to popular demand, as it was encouraging spamming, and since then, things here have been fine.

This forum is self-controlling (more or less;)), so we do fine with things the way they are. As BrassMonkey said about DAoC, nature of the game and all that. Its all just a quest to level up.

We can already tell who's been around a while, as there's a 'Date Registered' line in the info section.

As for spamming in the General Forum... it was done a lot in the past, but is not practised so much these days as most oldies have a custom title.

Soooo... if custom titles do indeed stop spamming, might it be worth letting people choose their own title?

Its a forum it happens. Is it possible to disable post counts and titles on a sub-forum basis? If say there is an easy fix to Damns problem. I'd rather not every other forum user have post counts and titles taken away simply cause DAOC posters are out of control.

Dunno about the DAoC retards but we don't really get people spamming or posting to up their ratings here anymore so not a big issue IMHO.

I can understand if people are running rampant, but if it is self contained in a thread AND off-topic (friendly chatter)... that should be fine.

No I am not a retard.

If you remove the postcount and titles I'm willing to bet that the nagging for personal custom titles will hit the roof. Unless you remove that aswell, something I suspect won't be received well. :p After all it's a nice feature creating a good atmosphere on the forums.

As someone said, it might be a good idea to link the titles to both registration date and postcount and then remove the post count display. To just have the titles to identify who has been around or not.

If DMW is 14 then knowing what most 14 year olds are like he does pretty damn well.

Since it was BrassMonkey who suggested that DAoC posters might be slower than stationary objects im not really sure why you're laying into him anyway.

It would be more suited to people like yourself.

Really, that's a compliment.

No, but there's nothing proving it to be correct. That means it's your personal opinion, nothing wrong with that. Carry on. ;)

Because DMW is very stereotypical and aggressive to anyone who posts in the DAoC forums. He is also very offensive when ever we meet. He needs to grow up in all honesty.

I'm looking at "narrative know-it-all critic".

You can add some of that sterotyping in for some flavour too though.

Because if people can't rank themselves & go "Ha, I'm an achiever in comparison to you" they lose focus (i.e. Simpsons episode where the teachers go on strike & Lisa goes "EVALUATE ME!").

It's especially relavant to DAoC because it's all about doing the same repetative shite over & over. Though the fact that they were given there own general forums tbh didn't help cos they're clogged with more shit than the drains I had to clear a week or so back.

As usual we're back to the good ole "Nobody can see what DAoC does for Game" so everyone shouts at it question that as usual there will be no difinitive answer to (not even in an "we're gonna whore GOA for money then run the servers" or similar) but there must be something otherwise (frankly) who would put up with all that drivel.

See past the drivel and you have 2 very similar communities. But because of the fact 1 of them has the power and the other can be sterotyped, you get the problem of naivity.

No you don't Ekydus, the fact that they are separated & don't cross the borders shows that quite clearly in reality.

Oh & the only people that have "the power" are the staff. It took years to get general forum mods, but DAoC got them almost instantly? So F- for arguments from your POV.

Yes, you simply uncheck the "posts in this forum count towards a users post count" box

Someone takes the piss outa you. You dont lay into them but the person that quoted them because you dont like them.

Before you accuse someone of being immature, overly agressive and generaly prejudice, I would advise you dont do the same when making said accusation. You just gave credit to your opponants argument.
