I cruised through some 0.3 sectors near hi-sec last night and all i could find was solid occupancy - all moons were inhabited.

Any ideas where a young corp can still find some space? Should I be heading to 0.0 sectors or grind faction to plant a POS in a 0.4 sector or something?

Alternatively I suppose we could try to destroy a POS - anyone have any hints on this? My only idea was to use the cruise missile equipped covert craft to repeatedly fire then cloak - repeat - until the weapons were down then move in a fleet?

Advice welcomed! :)

Most of the good moons are taken these days. What do you need a pos for? If you join an alliance with 0.0 space, you'll likely be able to plant a pos anywhere you like.

I know that when I was in IAC, we had maybe 15-20 systems that where IAC space but no one lived there.

Not all moons in lowsec or 0.3 close to empire are inhabited. Most good moons are yes, but you might get lucky and find one with good minerals that someone abandoned long time ago.

Of course assuming moon mining is what you want to do. That's the only "good moon" factor there is.

If you want moons for other purposes, in lowsec there is little point except moon mining or research facilities. But in 0.0 it can work as a temporary starbase.

Your idea of using cloaks and cruise missiles won't work. First of all missiles don't do damage if you are cloaked when they hit. Second of all it would take alot more time. Even a small POS has like 9 million shield HP, then adding on top of that armor and structure.

What you need is a medium sized fleet with sniper battleships taking out guns and then tower. Or even better Dreadnoughts or Carriers. And plenty of support in case tower gets help.

To put it into perspective, my corp had a contract from some very good friends for some high sec pos shooting a while ago. Normally we don't do pos shooting cos it's boring as hell, but friends are friends and they needed 2 posses cleared from a system.

We had 2 geddons, an absolution, a raven and a mega. It took us 5 hours to take the shields down, 4 hours for the armor, 2 hours for the structure.
Easily the most boring day of my eve life.

Gah - thats where experience tells over theory :) I'm only getting my first Cloaks today (Electronics V was the slow bit) so need to experiment...

Second of all it would take alot more time. Even a small POS has like 9 million shield HP, then adding on top of that armor and structure.

Yup - although a fair number are currently bugged so if you attack after the daily maintenance period they only have 50% shields which would save a bit of time ;)

Or even better Dreadnoughts or Carriers. And plenty of support in case tower gets help.

Hmm - I hadnt considered carriers - would you take out all the POS weapons first? Otherwise it would surely total a lot of fighter drones?

I'm going to hang back a bit longer before going POS - I dont really need it just yet and I think the idea of making money from moon mining has probably gone so I'd just stick it anywhere for research.

I'm looking to set myself up in the capital ship components market initially and then move onto carriers and fighter drones - I just love those capital ships :)

In the mean time I'll focus on raising my faction to 4 so I can launch a 0.4 POS - plenty of moons to choose from at the moment in 0.4 and you can even mine.

The Corp I'm in is big enough to take a POS moon by force if needed but I'd rather wait till I have a few carriers.

I guess eventually I'll want to head out 0.0 but initially 0.4 space seems safer for research on costly BPO's.

Thanks for all the advice so far - I avidly read the official forums but theres so much to process and I'm still pretty new to all this :)

Well, atm moon mining is not profitable (unless it's a good moon). However moon mining AND making simple+complex reactions make quite a profit atm.

With my reactions atm I am looking at 1 bill ISK each month after fuel costs. It's not too shabby for my little operation atm.

POS weapons usually need to be shot first, but first any warp scramming batteries. It's because people can manually control guns if they have skills and if it's a well defended POS it can take down a BS in 1-2 volleys.

Can't control guns in low sec pos'es as far as I know. My geddon went from full shields to 6k armor (out of 40k) in a single volley from a player operated large pos in 0.0 though. Thankfully I was aligned and warped out as soon as exclaimed WTF.

As for researching, send a mail to Tamia Clant, of the New Eden Research Alliance. Basically, they have 4 or 5 pos'es in high sec, that are configured to allow Alliance members access for research purposes. It's 3 mill a month. I had an alt join in a 1 man corp. All that's required is an alt (achura inventor) and the training of the skill scientific networking to level 1 (takes a matter of minutes). And you're good to go with 5 or 6 jobs at any time. Can create 2 alts to double the number of BPO's you can research. Your BPO's never leave your corp hangar, so no risk from theives or pirates blowing up your pos, and means you can focus your main on more important stuff.

Errr. Of course you can control POS guns in whatever security level. I don't see any logic to why the hell not either.

Nah, in empire you can't, as you would be able to take on concord, or grief people by gang warping them to a pos.

You're left with the pre set definitions.

yes but who's stupid enough to build a POS in empire? u NEED to be able to control the guns if theres a serious attempt at bringing it down.

In empire you are protected by Concord tho - anyone attacks the POS gets flattened?

Presumably in 0.4 and below you can use the guns?

Can shoot the pos if you're at war without concord intervention. Low sec, you get a sec status hit if not at war I think

Dude. Of course you can anchor, online and control guns in any security space. If you CHOOSE to get ganged with someone and get gang warped to a POS in highsec/lowsec that's your bloody problem!

All towers have their own rules of engagement settings, but usually they fire up on any non-corp entity that enters the grid that the POS is on and is within range of the guns.

In low-sec there is no CONCORD, in any regard if you bait CONCORD to your POS in highsec and shoot on them, first of all your tower will probably get BBQd (it's an exploit to get away from CONCORD after agressing someone or something in high-sec without cause), second of all it's stupid.

In case of empire wars, people can attack the POS of others and the defenders can control the guns just like any other scenario.

Ah, they changed it recently (not been able to play for 3 months, just logging in to change skills):

From patch notes:
It is now possible to control offensive starbase structures in high sec space. However they will only allow you to target players whom you are at war with or who are criminally flagged towards your corporation.

Mmmm, means attacks on large deathstar pos can get get ugly.

My bad :(

Hmm - for POS weaponry I guess people just go for the max range weapons - otherwise they face the possibility of being sniped at beyond their effective range?

Great Info in this thread btw - thanks for all participants so far :)

For POS weaponry, do a mix. Large guns or Citadel torp launchers take up alot of fitting, so not too many of those. But for a serious low-sec or 0.0 large POS have atleast 6 medium guns of some type, 4-6 small guns, atleast 1 disruptor and see if you want to fit more e-war like another disruptor, web etc.

Oh - a new question - thought I'd put it here - If a Control Tower is un-anchored do the guns on that POS automatically shutdown?

yes in 0.4 and below you can use the guns. but then you dont have concord to save you either. there all you will have is the gate + station guns.

in 0.5 and above you DO have concord, but cant do jack shit with the guns even if it IS a war target thats shooting at it. and if its a war target then concord wont save you anyway.

so anyone thats stupid enough to build a POS in empire NEEDS to have it destroyed.

Yes.
If the tower is offline, everything else will be offline. If the tower is unanchored then anyone can unanchor any POS module (guns, labs etc) in the vicinity.

So for guns to be active there has to be an online tower, with anchored and online guns.

Hmm - interesting - I saw a POS yesterday that had something unanchored but guns were online - must have been a different part of the POS I guess.

Thanks for the replies again btw :)

Sometimes you want more stuff than the POS's CPU & grid will support, we have ammo & drone construction among other arrays that are generally offline unless we need to make / reprocess stuff.

Yeah most common is to have offline but anchored hardeners are large POS. Or offline but anchored guns + disruptor on deathstars. So you just online when POS is in trouble.
