Port forwarding on a router

Hi guys.

I recently bought a Cnet CNAD804-NF Conexant ADSL 4 port Ethernet Router. It works fine and I can access the Internet and all that but, I need to open some ports in order to host/play Rise of Nations over DirectPlay. I found all the ports which need to be forwarded so I configured them in Virtual Server settings on my router. That, however, didn't work for me so I double-checked the WAN, LAN, and virtual server settings but all looks good to me. So I tried enabling DMZ (De-Militarized Zone). DMZ mode causes all Internet traffic to be forwarded to a specific computer behind the router, thus "exposing" it to the Internet. That setting is not recommended since it leaves your computer vulnerable to attacks but I was pretty desperate. To my surprise, that didn't work either. So now I have read the "How to make your router work" guide on the Game's website which didn't help much, I have tried e-mailing the company's support team without no response, then I called the company which sold me the router — of course, without no luck; they're fucking useless as always — and finally, I got my friend to come over here but he didn't manage to figure it out either. So before I go ballistic, :wall: I just thought if you guys might have any suggestions or point me out what I am missing.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

you have done it the right way, of course opening ports is going to make your computer vulnerable, but if you use a software firewall on the pc in question there should be no problem.

Incidentally:

Processor: Intel P4 3.2C Ghz
Memory: 1.5Gb DDR400 PC3200 (3x 512MB Crucial sticks)
Motherboard: Asus P4C800 DL-RAID
Gfx Card: MSI GeForceFX 5900 Ultra 256MB
Monitor: 19" Sony FD Trinitron
Hard Drives: 2x Western Digital 120Gb (w/ 8MB buffer).
Sound Card: Creative SB Audigy 2 Platinum 6.1

I'd take one of those DDR DIMMS out - with three modules in that order your motherboard is unable to run in dual-channel and there will be very little that uses over 1Gb.

If willy-waving >1Gb is important to you, then buy another, either way at the moment you're only getting half the available system memory bandwidth! :|
