The funny thing is that a lot of unis around the country are already over subscribed etc.

So where are all the NEW ones gonna go???

(I say put 'em under the stairs).

I think a far worse fate should await them, make them work.

bah

too many ppl go to uni these days anyway.. 80% of them i imagine do these weird fucking courses that are no use to anyone but supposedly they learn "life skills" like time management, coping with deadlines etc... at least that's what some employers i've spoken to told me...

what the fuck IS the point like?

you can do degrees in architectural stained glass fgs! (well i suppose that might actually get you a job doing stained glass, so that's a bad example, but ya-know-what-i-mean)

And who exactly is going to pay for that??

Anyhow, there is a need for unskilled labour to do work that machines are unable to do untill such time as we have progressed in technology...

You dont need to go to uni to do skilled labour, university rarely actually teaches you anything useful. All it says to an employer is "i have the ability to learn". Some degrees obviosuly are worthwhile, science, medical, maths, law etc, but most people stupid useless degrees like philosophy and theology, and the History of Art.

Even Computer science degrees are fairly useless, unless you are looking at something more extreme, arhcitecture or advanced algorithmic, or AI programming maybe, but the bog standard courses, uselss to an emplyer, in some cases it can even work against you. For IT its experience that counts, even if its fairly low level.

I used to know someone who ran a very successful consultancy and he rarely hired graduates, because everythign they have been tought, all their "practical" experience was learnt in perfect conditions within a laboratory. Subsequently they had no idea how to do it in the real world, and would set up or reset office networks to these "lab" conditions, subsequently the network would fail and hed get called in to fix it. blah blah blah, degrees arnt the be all and end all ;p

Then it should be paid for out of taxes, Uni should be available to everyone who wants it.

I think Uni should be free to go to but I also think it should be tougher to get into.

Uni's a fucking expensive place to go to right now. I can see Damini coming out of Uni with over 20 grand's worth of debt.

How fucking long is that going to be hanging over her head?

I fucked up uni and came out with 2 grand's worth of debt which I'm STILL paying off despite having a reasonably respectible wage. AND I had a job while I was at uni, my parents paid my rent and brought me "food parcels".

Students are no longer the spongers they once were. For a person to go to Uni, it means their parents are forking out for certain things, the student has to get a part time job to fork out for things, they have to get loans to live and they have to pay accomodation costs.

Students may get discounts in shops or whatever but it's hardly a substitute now is it?

Ultimately the aim of uni is to come out with the ability to get a better job (or even just the self confidence that uni can give you) and earn a higher wage and so pay the government more taxes.

I think students have a real shit of a time cos people still have the old fashioned view that students get everything for free. So not only to they have all the debts piling up, they have the grief off people who don't know what they're talking about and are told to "get a fucking job you lazy arse student scum!".

some manchester unis are oversubscribed at the moment they are having to provided sussidides accomodation in the Imperial hotel in Manchester normal nightly rate =105 quid for students 10 per night.

i agree with scooba university should be free for anyone with the inclination and ability and it should be payed for out of taxes. The country will benefit from it in the long run from income tax from graduates which are certainly a lot higher than from a manual worker sitting at a bench in a factory all day for minimum wage.

Where are the jobs going to come from I hear you ask? Foreign companies will be attracted to this country by a skilled workforce

I'll vouch for that seeing as I'm one of the UMIST students STILL in a hotel. It's ridiculous. It's made worse cause while everyone else has met upwards of 8 flat mates on a daily basis I've met about 5 people in freshers week and a few more today at lectures. It's additionnally worrying as - being the second most unemotional person I know - I've started having mood swings (of the non female variety) and general depressive symptons. It'll be alright, I'm rational enough to know that, but it is the most stressful and infuriating week in recent memory.
£105 a night 4* hotel or not, I didn't come to Manc for that. Everyone I speak to says "oh so it's not that bad then" when I describe the hotel, but to live out of it when all your friends at other unis are meeting new people on day one, it hurts.

At the time I considered going, but I just thought that uni wasn't right for me and I was against having all that debt which was also a major point in my decision.

Not supporting Mellow, but 20K is a frankly ludicrous amount of debt, unless you're doing something stupidly expensive like law, or extra long like Medicine
