Poor Search engines

I have to say that since buying game net membership I have been sorely dissappointed by the lack of ease for searching for and playing games on this site. It is definetely the worse site for playing online as noone ever plays here. I know because I searched for a whole weekend trying to play others and not a glimmer.
Barrysworld may be one of the older sites but NOT the best by far.
I play on gamespy or through blueyonder now as these are more popular and have at least people to play.
Get it sorted ie ease of use and ease to find games oh wait and find some people there is as I said a distinct lack of them.

If you look at your weekly game.net email you'll see the times of the regular weekly games ( of which there is something on every night ). I agree the site is a bit confusing for first time users oh and PS: you play on gamespy? they started hosting servers did they? :X

plays on gamespy through blueyonder? o_O

anyway, these lot are probably gona tell you the same thing they tell everyone else: as more subs start coming in the more people you will see on the servers. that is, of course, if they know how to get on them :)

tbh u wont get people playing on the servers, unless its a pre arranged thing

there just arent enough people with subs for servers to be used without it being arranged in advance

also the weekly games should be organised as a bonus to normal games, not a subsitution

ECA, u say there are games every night...well what if u only play a single game or mod? theres not something there for him every day is there?

u have to agree, no matter how u sugar coat it, the subscription IS a waste of money at the mo.

also the site is a bit shit for looking for games, there should be a direct link to the browser, rather than having to go through serveral pages to get to the browser for a particular game

Mostly right but if you say nah its a waste of money wait till more people subscribe....its a catch22.

And the masses won't pay until there is no other option but to pay - that's simple economics for you. Nothing else matters, not the "class" of people playing, whether or not there are cheats on the servers or not. Just having to pay money, or not.

It's that simple.

also they wont pay because nobody plays on these servers enough too :( its such a waste too, really good servers bw has

Aye, in that respect its definitely a Catch 22.

There should really be demo servers I think.. servers you can play on for an alloted time, before being kicked off. Or perhaps times when the servers are publicly accessible, after which point non-subscribers are unceremoniously booted off.

A bit like Television X. So I'm told.

I'm sure after freeloaders have started to build up friendships, etc and buddies on specific mods, etc they'd end up paying. Or maybe they'll just play during the free times, who knows.

Either way it would be free marketing - gauging who knows about BW's existence (and not paying) vs. those actually paying to play on it.

That sounds like a very good idea. Only problem I can foresee after thinking about it for about 10 seconds would be people only using them when during the free sessions.

surely a BETTER way would be to make 1 server for each game have a limited number of open slots and reserve the rest for subscribers? That way the servers will allways have people on, subscribers can always get a game, and you tempt people to join.

This subject has already been flogged to within an inch of its life.

£12 down the pan I can live with.

Apathy rules, well if I cared it would.

Something else needs to be tried, thats for sure, there can only be maybe 80 people who play on the subscribers servers in total, and I think that's probably a generous estimate.

Might be interesting to get a word from the suits on how they see game.net going. One way or another something has to change as it's just not working, and we can't keep on 'giving it a bit of time to build up' forever.

It's a shame one of these threads pops up every few weeks, but it's obviously still an issue, and will continue to be so unless they try a new approach I feel.

Making the servers free for say 7-8.30 every night would, I'm sure get the subs rolling in, however I'm pretty sure the reply would be that this doesn't fit 'The System'.

This is the same system which means that despite Game.net being one of the only subscription GSP's , it is still the last to start providing for those games. Months of waiting for operation flashpoint, because it didn't fit the system.... still waiting for official Ravenshield, because it doesn't fit the system..... we'd love to host teamspeak servers for you, but it doesn't fit the system......DoD updated several days after all the other Gsp's, probably because the system doesn't allow it to be updated as easily as the other Gsp's seem to find it..... Maybe it's time to realise that the very 'system' that is meant to be the core of this new style subscribers only Gsp, could actually end up being the death of it at the same time.

Anyway, rant over for another few weeks, bloody good job they extended the subs for a year, else come another 5 months or so, where would we be?

it would be nice to have someone from game to show some sort of input here on the forums too, like what they think of these ideas and stuff. what about a Q+A session on irc some time, like i've seen with other GSPs (i hope that means game server/service provider ;))

or maybe there has been and i just missed it

Actually, we do read these things. Even "The Big Boss" reads our forums on a daily basis. I've linked him this thread to ensure he see's it.

been saying it for f00king ages :-]

I dont know how workable it would be for other games but I know its possible for CS.

EDIT: and therefore all HL mods.

G

But I don't think it is workable within 'the system', and there lies the problem.

Thankyou for agreeing

As I said before the service is tres lame.
Many of you have agreed with this in various (and strange) ways.
Some have also suggested changes, but I seriously doubt anyone will listen soon, Blueyonder took about a year and a half to change to an easier format itself after a hefty few complaints.
Problem is I suspect that GAME is a business and Chiefs are primarily out for your cash (as are the rest now) 2MB broadband for £50 I dont think so.
Keep complaining for the length of your subs and maybe someone will get the hint. Iwould like a good a site in Britain but as I say Blueyonder is my only bet and I have been playing for 2+ years now online. Gamespy (although geared towards the dreary and bad losers I've noticed American public) is after all long established and does have quite a variable diet of gamers and lists.
By the way to the plonker who read my original thread I said through Gamespy OR through blueyonder!

The plonker was merely pointing out that Gamespy is merely a service that allows you to access game servers. You can access the same servers in other, better ways. Gamespy 3d was (once?) an ok program, but Gamespy Arcade was poo from day 1.
