Tragedy for those involved, and the polar bear, which was shot (but not killed apparently, so it's walking wounded somewhere). The cartoon is funny though :)

Rescuers took the polar bear away from the site after it was shot dead by a team member.

There have been a few deaths before there - I watched a documentary as to why the bears were suddenly killing people and they linked it to the noise of landing/takeoffs at the time the bears attacked.

Was watching BBC this morning, they had some BBC reporter who'd been to Svalbad on. The interviewer goes:

"So did a Polar Bear ever impregnate your camp?"

Tea went up my nose :<

It's always the fucking same when an animal is involved.

Is there anything you can actually do to protect yourselves on those types of trip? Everyone has got to be in their tents at night I would have thought, and if a bear attacks you are basically screwed?

Tragic news, but if you go exploring polar bear country, theres a reasonable chance you'll encounter one. I thought the guides all had weapons to protect the party? Snoozing on watch?

Guides had weapons, everyone had some rudimentary weapons training, bear tripwires with blank cartridges were set up around the camp routinely.

The correct precautions were taken, shit happens in hostile environments. The world keeps turning.

So the limit of acceptable fun making is somewhere between 1 death(a-ok to make fun of) and 90+(not ok 'cause it's a howwible tragedy). Right?

Or do we have another situation of ye old hypocrisy?

The lesson ?

Dont go to Norway!

Thier prices will give you a heartattack, they will bomb & shoot you, and if all else fails they'll have you for breakfast!

There isn't a limit as such, but if your name is Horatio...

I still think bears and wolves should be reintroduced to the UK.

Hmm - I saw some detailed pictures of their camp and they had a tripwire set about 10 feet from the edge of the camp which seems just a tad too close considering you cant really predict which way it will bolt.

Surely you would set a watch when in bear country with regular attacks?

Sleeping in tents was a stupid idea in the 1st place, the polar bear wasn't at fault they are the top of the food chain there and a curious creature by nature so i would put this down to human arrogance

Spent the night wild camping on Scafell (Englands highest mountain), shit that story had me thinking as the wind whistled around the 30 quid tesco tent, if they did bring back wolves it would make walking in the Lakes a lot more interesting.

How can a Polar bear be at fault?
I put it you Mr P .Bear, if that's your real name, that you wilfully entered a peaceful gathering of humans with intent and your reckless and dangerous biting of people's jugular veins concluded with the tragic death of a young man.
