Hi all,

I have just got a new computer.

Duron 850@1.05ghz from overlockers.co.uk
Abit KT7A - Raid Mobo
Hercules Prophet 2 GF2 MX - 32mb
256mb pc 133 ram

I have been having real problems playing UT though

I run it in 1024x768 at 16 bit colour depth and on average I only get 30 frames per second. The problem is that I have got my old machine (Celeron 333, some generic HP mobo, Voodoo 3 2000 PCI - 16mb and 98mb pc100 ram) and it runs better on the old machine than on the new one!!!!

On the new machine I have been getting about 30 fps on average and I have been getting 40+ fps on the old machine.

Is there any know issues with the Mobo / Graphics Card combination that stop running properly with UT?

Surely on a machine with more than twice as much ram, 3 times more processor speed and a AGP card that has twice the memory of the old PCI one I should expect a better performance from UT?

BTW I have also got all the latest drivers for the graphics card and latest patch for UT.
I have DirectX version 8 and Direct media 6.
For some reason the NVidia detenator drivers wont work properly on my version of UT and they cause a lot of problems that i wont go into on this already extremely long post,

Anyway, thanks for any help in advance

What kind of Score do you get on a Benchmark?

And you have selected Direct3D to use within UT not anything else?

Geforce2 uses a different API than the Voodoo cards

I havnt done a benchmark because I have just bought the new PC and I havn't got it running properly yet. But my clan leader gets about 70-80 FPS with exactly the same setup and a GF2 MX 32mb graphics card.

He ran Mad2001 benchmarking and got a score of 2500 if that is any use to you though?

I am runnning in D3D mode and I have also run quake 3 which looks crap too.
Nice and smooth but crappy pixelated graphics compard to Voodoo card which is running in he PCI slot rather than the AGP slot (huh,"Advanced Graphics Port" My ass :( ).

When I run the voodoo card on the new system I get a lot better performance but that is then using Glide for the hardware rendering rather than D3D. But I will try D3D out on it when I get home.

Also smetime he graphics are completely Fuxored. I can boot into windows fine and the graphics are very good. well as good as they can be running windows obviously, but when i start up UT i get a problem. A problem that i can only describe as like when u set the resolution of the moonitor too high and you cant see WTF is on the screen.

That is weired and also doesnt happen very time?

Maybe the GF2 is just Fuxored?

Anyway thanks for the help.

Could be a lot of things...Try here mate

http://www.geforcefaq.com

Huge long list of issues and fixes. I had a Creative Geforce2mx and I ended up exchanging it for a EB Home Brand and it runs excellent. I get a MadOnion benchmark of about 3000 but I have a PIII500.

Also check your AGP Aperture size is set high enough in your bios and if it is totally remove all your video drivers and reinstall. If these dont work it may well be your card.

Yeah, versions 429 (stable) and also tried version 430(beta) but it was a bit buggy so i did a clean install of ME and then put 429 back on. I also re-installed version 7.oa of DirectX and that didnt work so I went back upto 8 and I also installed direct media 6. Which i thnk is the latest version?

Anyway Jack shit has worked so far and i am really Pissed off now. maybe I will take the card back and get the Kyro one instead.

Anyway. Thanks for your help :D
Any more ideas before I take the card back would be appreciated :)

Thanks Again,

apart from going thru the geforce faq very carefully i'm out of ideas. oh, except did u try the drivers that came with the card rather than the nvidia reference ones yet ?

Try if u can swapping ur voodoo with your geforce And just see if it makes any differece. As UT runs a lot better with voodoo cards in glide. But considering the processor u got it shouldnt really. Try using it at 850 i.e stop overclocking and then try it.

Dont think it's the o/c bit.
My thoughts would be you have d3d on for the V2 card, and it's conflicting with the D3D mode for the 2Mx. Have u tried a reinstall of ur new system without the V2? Did it run well then? And which Nvidia driver version have you got?

I've got a TNT2U card with a P3-800 and it runs at over 70 FPS. The 2Mx should go slightly faster on the Duron 850.

Hope this helps.
