What soundcard have you got there? If it's an SB, try either getting the very latest drivers for it, or disabling hardware acceleration.

If you do have an SB I'm sure one of the people who have sorted may be able to help (Summo possibly)

Its on-board. RealTek ALC650 6-channel audio.

Latest drivers installed.

I have to say, that I feared the worst when I saw you had replied Scooba. ;)

But thanks anyway. :)

hmm, so this lag stuff (I'm guessing it's not actual lag since it happens in SP?) happens only in bf42, and not in other games?

The weird thing is that looking over your specs my second PC is pretty close to that, apart from having a lower speed processor (1.5 gig) and a sound card, and it's silky smooth in 800*600. You haven't said what res you are running in, maybe bump it down a notch if its high? If that doesn't work, try disabling sound in game and see if that makes a difference.

If none of the above work make sure you aren't running a stupid number of bots, and/or have the AI slider up full.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. Hopefully someone else will be able to help more tomorrow.

Yes! Try this! My crappy FPS problems were sorted when I disabled sound, and I found using the latest sound card drivers (manufacturor ones, not Windows Update ones) and disabling Hardware Sound on page 2 of the sound options fixed all my problems.

that soundcard is fine

I use that on board sound and it's fine with all the sound options maxed / hardware acceleration ON. I dont use the 5.1 sound tho, simple 2 channel is enough for my headphones.

I got the same processor as you, I have a slightly quicker GF4-ti4200 and mine flys at 90+fps 1152x768x32x100mhz. Never tried single player mode tho.

What made a big difference to me and got a lot of things working was a via4in1 driver upgrade to version 4.43. Not got a clue what these actually do (something to do with AGP I think?) but it fixed a load of problems I had when I first started playing the demo.

Can grab the file from here http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2
Check your compatability first though.

I'm also using the 30.82 or 40.72 dets which is another difference between our set-ups so could be another option to try.

console.showfps 1

Shows them top left of the screen.

Close the Speech shortcut menu to see them easier (F8).

We told you, you should have formatted your machine when you changed hardware!!!!:p but you decided the lazy route

you could cheat by deleting the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM out of the system registry and rebooting, but im not certain if it works too well in Windows XP
(maybe they should have included the REMOVE HARDWARE option from Win2k into WinXP!)

just be prepared to use "Last Known Good Profile" just in case :eek6:

edit:// i wish they would hurry up and enable images on this forum!

XP handled my recent "motherboard/CPU/Ram/GFX card" replacement admirably, booted first time, installed all the new hardware itself and worked/performed as would be expected. I was suprised.

Naturally I reformatted/installed afterwards just to make sure but I didn't feel I "had to"...

try

ok looking at your specs, first thing update them gfx drives from 30.40 to 30.82, next turn off all fsaa in d3d mode the game dont support it at any level, sp is really bad if you tinkered witht e ai settings and stuff best left at default or lowered not increased,
sfx turn down the sfx to its lowest settings but leave the acceleration on off if its still choppy,

aslo you may to add more mem to run the game smoother

try a lower res 800x600x32 detail low

btw guys heres one trick you can all do, i found it makes the game increase fps by least 30% or more

if you got rivatuner goto the dx setting mipmapping, enable the user check box move the slider to the right, and you notice it makes the tress and other ojects all blury near objects are normal but far way are just ghosts like but he players models are normal ie soldiers tanks planes jeeps all normal.

yes it looks ugly, but its fps your after its the thing to do.

ps if you slide it to the left think of doom 1:) all sharp edges and pixely :p

I believe you can remove hardware drivers in XP. Go to the Device Manager then View > Show Hidden Devices.

If that isn't right there is a way to do it cos I have done it :)

Willier mate, I think the problem may well come down to the fact you have a .... modem.
There, I've said it now. Im sorry. I feel all defiled somehow ;)
Listen, I get dreadful lag online with this game with isdn, I cant even begin to imagine what its like with 56k :/ Its particularly bad with aeroplanes flying over head, and for some reason when Im standing on the deck of ships.
Put it this way, i dont even want to play the thing any more until another patch maybe sorts it out.

It happens in single player too.

Ahh... so you spotted the deliberate flaw in my arguement did you ??

Errr..... oh.
Have to say , mine works fine in sp mode, its only online its horrible. And even then, its the planes that cause all the trouble. I've never worked out how to make the console commands stick, though, you know so i can get a maximum fps etc so its all nice and smooth.
Willier I turned the sound down to 22khz (or whatever it was) , and it made quite an improvement . Give that a go ?

I had really bad problems on my setup, which should be more than adequate. Turning the sound detail *right* down helped, as did installing the latest sound and graphics drivers.

Now, surely you aren't stupid enough to think that you have to reformat an entire hard disk just to install a virgin version of the o/s back on it??????????

*surprised at lack of burns*

hey cheers guys and Throd. :p

I'll give all your suggestions a whirl, except for Insanes "reformat" suggestion. This is the only software that I have trouble with, so I dont think thats the route cause.

It's simply quicker to reformat/install than it is to install/defrag. Plus you have the peice of mind that it's completely clean, no dodgy recoverable files hanging around ;-)

Good luck Willier, it is worth sorting out as it's a fine game.

So I take it the only thing you have on that drive is the o/s :)

In that case its not so bad after a quick back up of My Documents.
