The maps are unzipped when you download them from the server, which is why it takes sooo long.

Um, from the actual game server? no they aren't zipped, they are *.tmp files until complete when windows renames them to *.bsp.

(Isn't BW2 meant to be for newbies though, hence only maps that come with the game?)

I thought in the last update of HalfLife/TFC Valve had included ZIP format.

I dont think each BW server should be aimed at one crowd or another, or otherwise the "newbies" will just get used to the same 4/5 Valve maps.
