I want some tips on what I need to do to get Region 1 and 2 DVDs playing on my Playstation 2.

I'd especially like to hear from those who have this running themselves, and what exactly is involved and the pitfalls etc.

I've heard about "Region-X" can some explain that one ?

Yes, Region-X is a cunning little CD that when combined with a Memory Card allows you to watch DVD movies from any region.

Simply place the CD in the PS2, select what region you want to watch and as you do so the PS2's tray opens, prompting you to place in your porn... er sorry... your legitimate, UK-released, PG-rated movie.

Job done.

I believe that you will also require a TV that accepts 4.43 NTSC (or RGB) signals and not just PAL since ALL R1 DVDs are NTSC.

Thanks everyone, I just looked at the Region-X website as well, I noticed they had a number of possible problems.

I sure my TV is NTSC compatible, but I'm not so sure about the SCART lead, its one I originally bought for the PS1 and it works with the PS2 fine. The PS2 came with a composite video lead and a SCART adaptor for it, which should I be using ?

I also have the Remote Controller, this needs a program on the memory card to work, can I load up the Region-X on the same memory card ?

Yes, you should be fine. Most Scart TVs are fine. If not just take your Region-X back to the shop.

Simple.

My Region X requires no memory card, just pop the disc in and away you go. It outputs the signal in PAL aswell, as my TV can't take NTSC (most unlocked DVD player conver the signal to PAL also).

RGB and NTSC are different things. RGB is a different type of scart, and seeing as the Yanks don't have scart, they are very different.

Wrong end of the stick there Bodhi. I know they are different and was only giving the alternative to an NTSC input.

Anyway, he is asking about R1 films from a UK PS2 (most likely) which will have a SCART.

Also you don't have to use a SCART Euroconnector at all. Some people use the composite or S-Video connection and still acheive the same thing bar the autoswitching on the TV.

That's right. And because R1 DVDs are encoded to output NTSC anyone trying to play R1 on a PAL TV will get a black and white picture.

Some DVDs (the Samsung 511 comes to mind) output NTSC signals to either 4.43 NTSC, PAL 50 or PAL 60 meaning that you don't need an NTSC compatible TV to watch R1, but, alas, the PS2 does not.

Most modern TVs (under 4 years) do accept NTSC. The only ones that don't are most portable TVs (14 inch) and any cheap own brand TV bought from Comet, Dixons or Currys. - Saisho, Goodmans and Matsui brands.

I use my old playstation one. So it doesnt matter just use a SCART one. Im pretty sure your TV will be compatable if its got a scart socket.

My Region X runs off a mem card that came with the CD. I brought the remote today and havent had chance to test it. I really do doubt that it wont work.
Simple answer is that Region X is well worth da money. Then make your way over to www.play247.com.

Just tested this. Didnt work at first with the remote as Region X is designed to work by default with the default PS2 DVD drivers. Luckly the little mem card they give you holds numbers to work with the future DVD driver updates. I updated my from looking on the www site and it works perfectly.
