Have seen similiar threads for other consoles, so I hope this is not against the rules. If it is then just delete this thread!

Revisiting the Final Fantasy 8 Soundtrack has brought a lump to my throat, as I remember childhood years spent working my way through countless Japanese RPG's. Unfortunately I gave my sister my playstation 1 (which was chipped) so she could play Harvest Moon to her hearts content. I have a ps2, but its untouched with regards to modding. I don't know anybody that could fit a chip (my old Japanese mate has swanned off to University) so basically I'm wondering whether playing backup discs with a ps2 is now possible using some sort of boot disc, rather than having to solder a chip or something into the ps2? Alternatively, is there some type of "action replay" card device? I remember they were a popular way of doing it with the original psx, although I never tried it myself.

Summary - I want to mod my ps2 so I can play imported/back up ps1/ps2 games. Is this possible? I have a cd burner etc, so I can download files as necessary if some sort of player made boot disc is available.

No links, cause that would break the CoC ;)

Basically, there are swap discs. They require you to replace the lid of your PS2 with one that can be opened from the top. You can then put the boot DVD/CD in the PS2, let it get to the welcome screen, swap the disc with your backup and play away.

It's not 100% compatible and a lot of the time you end up making a ton of coasters before you get the right burning speed and media for the backup to work.

If you can find some way to get a chip in the machine then do it. just don't try it yourself unless you are very, very good at soldering. I tried to do mine and decided against it when I found I had to solder 12 connections around a chip, where each point was only 1/2 a millimeter away from the next. ;)

Signup for the disqworld forums (Playstation section), there are guys like m4tty that will arrange for courier collection and delivery plus the fitting of a good mod chip all for around £40, he had mine collected/fitted and back to me in 4 days or so about a year ago. He has a great reputation on those forums as well, has been on there for years and is totally trustworthy. There are a few others that offer a similair service as well.

Just make a post in the Playstation forum asking for a quote and I am sure someone will reply.
