I get really high ping while playing cs, always exceeding 600.
Is there a way to lower it without upgrading any hardware or changing to cable connection?
Does using any of those webboosters that claim that can increase internet connection lower the ping?
I am using a 56k modem but always dialing up at 36000bps.

Try dialling up with barrydial, thats fast, but if you're using an internal windmodem then you'll probably never get a better connection :p. If its not a winmodem try getting the latest drivers for it etc, it maybe needed to be flash upgraded to v90 if you are only connect at 33.6k

Where are you based? Your profile says Singapore, and if that's right then you would be getting high pings to BW servers.

Like Meatballs says try Barrydial if you're in the UK, as its only 2/3 hops to the servers, so that'll rule out any internet problems.
If your ping is still that high then maybe your pc isn't fast enough because the in-game latency figures take into account how long your pc takes to process and display each packet sent to you.

I am using a HSP k56FLEX PNP modem. I connect through Pacific Net in Singapore.
How to i search for local servers??

No wonder your ping is so high!
On a local server you'd be pinging around 180-200 probably.

My route to your isp goes via New York, so if your route to Barrysworld servers is similar that would explain the 600 pings.

Try http://www.gamespy.com for a server browser or pingtool, something like that should help you find a local server.

Try joining HTGK.com.sg Counterstrike server by typing
connect 202.42.122.134:27015 in the console.

I dunno, my 50 ping was replaced by a crap 200-250 last night. It's been increasing all week, it was steady at 100-150, but now it's worse, FAR worse then my old modem:) not just me either everybody was pinging high:(
