Hello all,

I am expanding my knowledge and I am going to start learning Php, I have been programming in ASP/ASP.Net since starting web development and want to broaden my knowledge.

I am looking for a Web hosts that support PHP, give some MySQL space, e-mail addresses, around 10GB/month transfer and around 100MB space. I want them to host a domain I will buy through them. I am looking at about £5 a month or so, any ideas?

Thanks in advanced,

Khan

Unforunately (depending on how you see it) I've never really had the need to have a proper look at what's on offer in terms of web hosting, hence it's hard to recommend any particular hosting company over an other.

Sometimes you'll find companies with extremely fancy sites but very little substance, and vica versa. Just quickly searching Google, however, I did find DreamHost's 'Crazy Domain Insane' package seemed quite impresisve for the price. That said, it is marginally over the £5 p.m. you specified.

You might want to try searching for hosting comparison sites, which allow you to specify the features and price you want and let the site itself do the leg work of finding a host to suit your needs. Just be sure the comparison site and the people it's linking to aren't 'in bed together', else you could end up with a raw deal.

Kind Regards

http://www.burtonhosting.co.uk did a good deal for Students' Social. Works out at £3.75 a month. And - from my experience - isn't shit.

Although the bandwidth isn't as good as you mentioned.

There is an 8GB (£65/year) option that works out at £5.33 a month, you might be able to add more bandwidth too - I can't remember.

Thanks guys some good feedback. I took a look around Google and found this one:

which looks good.

I've done loads of sites before so I want to make a useful PHP site, I'm going to be doing another site that focuses on World War PC Games, so its future proofing too.

Thanks guys,

Hello again

PHP and MySQL are great things, but they can be extremely daunting when you first come to use them. Things like the PHP Manual are excellent resources which in time you will use more and more, but when you're just starting out, they can be very off putting due to their predominantly technical nature.

Unfortunately (depending on how you look at it), I have taught myself everything I thus far know about PHP and MySQL. Now that's fine when you have the time and patience to just sit back, try new things and learn from your mistakes, but it does make it hard to advise others how to begin the learning process.

Perhaps a good starting point is Webmonkey. Their PHP Tutorials start with the very basics, and go through to much more advanced topics. Some people like their writing style, others don't, but it's certainly worth checking.

Other sites of interest include SitePoint's PHP tutorials and, sometimes offering more complex articles, DevShed's PHP tutorials. You may find that searching the above sites for the things you are specifically interested in will yield greater results.

Other than that, searching Google, or your favourite search engine, will yield a lot of results for fairly simple introductions to PHP and MySQL.

The fundamentals of PHP and MySQL are very simple and quick to learn, but because of this, you'll often find that tutorials assume quite a lot of prior knowledge. If all else fails, and you're serious about your coding, then there a great many books available to buy, or rent from your local librairy, which will help you get to grips with PHP and MySQL.
And finally, of course, there's the WebDev forum here at BarrysWorld

Hope this helps

Thanks for that MC Hammer, it's actually amazing how easy PHP is. If like me you know a language like ASP and ASP.Net they are very similar. PHP looks a very good language, also with the standard database being MySQL makes it very powerful.

I am starting my PHP project this weekend... this is where the fun starts!
