Photoshop help.

After reading Miles Binks posts in the Desktop thread, I decided to have a go at making some indented buttons for my desktop.

I went to dotcomguys webby and he has a tutorial about how to do it. Ive downloaded all the stuff needed and one of his icon packs.

Now, following the guide Ive got stuck at the
Next Add your icon or picture in the layer called 'Insert Icon or Picture Here'. Usually, a 32x32 sized icon or pictures is best for Dented Icons.
bit, I cant for the life of me find out how to transfer the icon onto the indent layer!!

Also, how do I view an icon in PS, ive converted it into a bitmap, but it dosnt mention having to that inthe guide.

Any help would be appreciated, I know there are some talented Photoshopers out there.

Failing that I will have to try to get in touch with Dot Com Guy.:(

k not sure about the icon bit but to take an image and put it in a new layer on another image simply get the 2 images on the screen at the same time, use the laso or the rectangular cutting tool to select the area u want to move from one image onto the other, hit ctrl+c (or right click, copy) then click on the second image to activate it and ctrl+v (or right click, paste)

easy :)

/edit

had a thought about opening that icon file, get the folder the icon or bitmap file is in up on screen and just drag the file into the photoshop screen should open it up

you need Gif Movie Gear

find an icon that you want to use, then open it up in GMG, then export it as a .psd

open the .psd in Photoshop add it to the dent template

save the dent icon as a psd (remember to merge visable)

open the new psd in GMG and export it as an icon

heh

let me try that again
  • Open Gif Movie Gear
  • Open the icon you want to use
  • delete all the smaller sized icons by clicking the individual frames then right clicking and choosing delete (leaving the largest)
  • Choose File | Export As | Photoshop PSD | save it
  • Open Photoshop and open the Dent Icon Template
  • Open the new PSD you just created
  • on the new PSD choose: Select | All
  • Then choose Edit | Copy
  • select the dent icon template
  • choose Edit | Paste
  • Move the new layer (the icon) to the bottom
  • Delete the guide layer leaving the icon, dent and highlight layers
  • Choose Layer | Merge Visable
  • Save the newly dented icon (my recommendation: Save as original PSD but NOT dent icon template)
  • Back in Gif Movie Gear open the dented PSD
  • Choose File | Export As | Icon | then save it.
Et Voila

Or you could have opened both images side by side, and clicked on the layers pallette for the gif image you wanted to import and drag that layer from the layers pallette onto the other image window.

And if you did that and held down shift it would auto-center it for you too.

You crazy kids.

:)

all well and good but.....

photoshop does not support icons to the best of my knowledge (the extension .ico or .icl)

and the linked version of Gif Movie Gear is for icons. Otherwise I would have suggest that myself.

Where do you lot learn your photoshopping skills?

I've seen some of summo/sar's in previous threads, and it's really nice stuff :)
Any advice to someone that wants to learn how to do that?

Heh. Shadow, I can use the 'extract filter' tool and that's about it. There are many tutorials around and I'd recommend finding some that you like the style of and working through them. Also, as amobea says, knowing what you want to do then finding a way of doing it is probably the best teacher.

Sar's good, though. Let's see what he says.

Play around with it, load up some shapes and stuff, then try to montage it. Work out what you want to do to it, then look it up in the help, do this for a multiple layer affair with loads of componants and by the end you'll have the basics and a few nice combinitations.

Now load up the forums, find a piccies thread, and photoshop the contents in a comedy fashion.

Heh, it's gonna sound really shit (IE Not the answer you wanna hear), but practice and reading up on the way the various tools work is the basic groundwork you need to do, because it's only when you know the program pretty much backwards that you can start really doing decent stuff with it.

I've been using PShop since version 4 (warezed that one), and been buying & upgrading it since version 5 (now up to v7.0), so in all I've been using it for roughly 5 years.

This is a list of websites (and some books) I read years ago when I first started using PShop:

Adobe Photoshop Expert Center

Photoshop Restoration and Retouching by Katrin Eismann (Buy the Book)

Photoshop Café

Phong

Eyeball Design

Some of those I haven't visited literally in a few years, as they've sat in my favourites which have been carried from PC to PC as I've upgraded and bought new machines since 1995 :)

Good luck :)

heh, cheers you lot.

I don't want to become some amazing graphic designer, just was interested in the basics of photo manipulation etc :)
I've just installed photoshop 7 on now anyway, I'll probably go and muck with it now, and read up on some of those links you've posted.

*signs up for adobe ID* :)

cheers for the info anyway you three
