I've just splurged on a new high quality lens in anticipation of better light, longer days and the clocks changing. I'm thinking about getting some of my existing and new stuff printed onto canvas because i'll be fucked if I hang anything on my walls that's mass produced (read: Ikea picture of new york that every c.nut has etc.) clichéd shite.

Photo to canvas services are ten a penny, but can anyone recommend a good one in particular?

In addition, I might want to have a pop at selling some pictures, but the "RRP" of some canvas sites would make selling them on ebay prohibitively expensive, difficult to make a return on, and I don't see someone paying upwards of £70 for a 3' x 2' landscape of one of my pictures when you've got mass produced average joe shat at a fraction of that price.

Any advice?

I've been looking at getting limited edition prints on canvas for some of my paintings. The cheapest option by far is to find a printer that will sell the canvas prints unmounted, and then stretch the canvas on to the frame yourself. It's not that difficult and the tools are relatively cheap. If you've got the time it's cheaper still if you make the frame yourself too, rather than buy pre-cut stretcher bars. Every canvas printing company I've looked at, the price is doubled or more if you want them to do the frame mounting for you.

tl;dr - Buy unmounted prints, mount them yourself :)

I had one done ages ago by an online service, 30x20 inches and it looks great. The expense though will be in the framing - Expect to pay £100 or more to have your nice pic framed.

Personally I wouldn't print to canvas, get it printed to paper and put behind glass, its easier to see.

This is a pic I took today that I may get mounted:

BTW G, what lens did you get? I want a new lens but can't afford it right now.

/edit: I wish someone would fix this board so it didn't ruin Flickr links.

I got Pentax's 17-70mm f/4 SDM lens which is a damn sight better than my previous kit lens. The silent autofocus mechanism will come in very handy at my sister's wedding. Of course it's not a substitute for a prime, but as a "walk around" lens it'll cover a lot of bases.

If I had to criticise it, it's a little soft at f/4 at 70mm and chromatic aberrations at f/4 and 17mm are a bit more pronounced than desired (easily corrected in Camera Raw however) which is to be expected on a zoom. Stopping down to f/8 and below and it's absolutely ace.

I don't know what their canvas prints are like, but Photobox do them and they're excellent. Plus if there's even a slight problem with it they'll reprint it for you with no hassle, their customer service is second to none in my experience.

Tom,

What problem with Flickr photos? Your photo looks fine here or am I missing some birds dancing around a pole?

The problem comes when I create a url, the description of which is the
. Allow me to demonstrate:

The forum gets a bit confused. I didn't make a mistake, but upon saving it changes the text repeatedly. The first edit was a Flickr Video, in a video window. The second edit, the video window went away, and the text gets changed again. Its weird.

No problem mate although the building is pre-WW2.
