Good idea on the part of the record companies.

Don't any of these companies realise the main reason people use music-sharing programs is to find tunes that aren't available in 99.99% of music shops?

That is the main reason, isn't it? :/

I am not rushing out to buy any CD's cos of this. It's normally fairly easy to spot the fakes (File Size, running time, etc).

That's exactly what I was going to say, I'm sure if I ever feel inclined to listen to a Britney track, I'll just go and buy it.

RIP Audiogalaxy, anyone know a decent mp3 sharing thing that has decent old 45s on? heh

surely on a peer to peer network file sharing proggy like kazaa or winmx, peeps would download it, realise it aint real, DELETE IT and hence removing that shared not right file from the system?

i mean, if theres say 14 people with exactly the same mp3 on the kazaa network sharing, it must be ok caus they would of deleted it if it was fake? or is it just me who thinks having 5 meg of worthless mp3 is a waste of me hdd?

crazy

I don't know... I downloaded Harry Potter twice, and both times it was naughty ladies in the shower. For some reason, people hadn't deleted that one... Hmmm....

It does seem a lot of people don't check there files since only too often you can download shit that has nothing to do with what you wanted.

Nah, these people don't seem to delete anything.

I was on KaZaa, and later found out that 15 people were sharing the same 64meg, corrupt version of Dreamweaver MX

No, the vast majority of music swapping on Kazaa etc is of "commercial", readily available music. Do a search and compare the number of UNKLE hits with the number of Metallica hits.

Nope, there's a vast amount of incorrect shite on there. Firstly, a lot of people just leech as much crap as they can, and don't actually get round to listening to half of it. Secondly (particularly with movies) lots of people rename files. It's pointless trying to get any new films from Kazaa, regardless of the filename it's bound to be a shitty TS copy of Monsters Inc or The Mummy Returns. God knows why people do this - it's not like Kazaa is ratio'd or anything, and anyone with any brain just downloads a minute's worth and hits Preview to check what the file is. Maybe it was this moronic behaviour that gave the studios the idea.

Regardless, it's never going to work. The amount of material that the studios can put out is insignificant compared to the amount of legit material out there, and it has all the feel of a playground tactic to me, and an express admission that they're losing the fight.

(Opening the argument a bit) imo the "authorities" have never really understood the mentality behind internet piracy (in whatever form, be it juarez, mp3s, vcds). The "releasers" don't do it for money, they do it for bragging rights, and because it's a challenge - it earns "kudos" in the community that you were the first person to get a studio leaked copy of Eminem's latest album, or crack Westwood's latest 'uncopyable' protection scheme. So just making the challenge harder isn't going to stop these people - if anything, it just means they try harder. It gives them a buzz, so trying to 'waste their time' just doesn't work - it simply makes the victory at the end all the more sweet. Look at this big juarez group bust that happened about 12 months ago, when the authorities proclaimed they had "broken the back" of internet piracy. Yeah, for all of 90 minutes.

You can't preview avi files, it has to be fully downloaded.

Most new movies currently in the cinema are Video Camera in hand jobbies and often weigh in at 200megs each part, normally 2 parts to each movie. A DVD ripped film weighs in at 700mb per 90mins.

whcih reminds me. must go find the video for the umbro football advert.

this just re-inforces my opinion that record companies are money gits and the only reason why I do go into music shops now is to pick up posters

Strangely enough though while you normally have to wait for them to come out on DVD there are copies of LOTR (2 x 700mb) and Monsters Inc (700mb) which have both been ripped from screener DVDs ;)

That's kinda shitty. The thing with Audiogalaxy is that it tried to cut down on this, by blocking commerical tracks at (presumably) the record company's request, leaving only the lesser known, rarer tunes (inc. white labels) available. What were the official grounds that RIAA got them shut down over?

As SdB said, AG was the best; 'doubt there'll be another like it for a while :/

I believe AG could no longer afford to keep going to court ;)
