Phone jack icon during play.

No matter what ISP I use, (including BW)During a multiplayer game, Quake 2 freezes and displays a phone jack icon in the top of the screen. I've capped my frame rate @ 30, that helps a bit, but not totally. I have a 33.6k winmodem

, is that the problem with the connection? Also, what rate should I set (2800 is too slow BTW)? Thanks everyone!

theres nothing wrong with your rate or your maxfps...

i'll just subtley point out here that your problem is that you're using a _winmodem_... i dont know why but these little b*stards are absolutely sh|te for playing over the net, i just got rid of my 56k winmodem (which gave pings of 250+ on average) having got hold of a friends USR 56k somethingorother and my ping has been reduced significantly to 130 at best... get a new modem.... its the only way

most people suggest a pace 56k internal but i wouldnt know because i havent tried one... yet...

Phone Jack Problems, 3 steps to solution:

1. Check to see if the missus has picked up the phone (this is invariably the cause)
2. Shout at her and blame her for causing you to die.
3. She divorces you.

This results in trouble free gaming.

! No, I've got a separate line for my modem. I'm gonna have to get a new modem. I'd like to get a Pace Internal, but it's a bit pricey @ 64.99 (ex.VAT). An external Diamond SupraExpress 56e pro seems a much better buy @ 49.99 (ex.VAT). Has anyone out there got a supraexpress, and if so, how does it perform?

Sorry I dont I'm a LPB myself , But I did have a cheesy 'Wisecom' 56k internal and gave me pings of 110 - 150 .

Works fine for me.....

Yup, I'm on a Diamond Supra Express 56i and it KICKS ASS. Honestly, I get the best ping by miles out of my clan (apart from the LPBs) and try to dial up via BW, cos dialup on BW usually connects at 41,333 - 44,000 bps and then I get ping of 130 - 150 consistently on BW servers.

My mate has a pace and my ping is consistently better than his, even tho he connects at 53, so its got my seal of approval

oooh, BTW, ping dropped by about 40 when I flashed to v.90

I thought a supraExpress 56i is basically a WinModem, as it needs a p166? Do you freeze up during play? Has anyone tried this with Screaming.net to see how it performs? So what ping do you usually get with barrysworld servers? And connecting at <46kbps is pretty crap. I would definitely buy this modem if it's as good as you say, as it's so cheap! thanx

I've always had shite ping times and now it looks like I know why (I have a USR "56k" winmodem).

I never get a connect speed faster than 33600, I've tried messing with init strings, and that only lets me force connect speed to about 31000 - anything that tries to force to 33600 or higher just won't connect. Is this typical for a winmodem??? How on earth can they justify putting "56k" on the blurb (with the crappy "subject to line conditions" disclaimer) if it doesn't EVER go over 33.6?

And ... is a Pace internal 56K my best upgrade option (without going digital

)?

Im using a USR Ext 56k Modem m8...and yes they are a bitch but without any init strings or extra settings at all i connect to BW at 50666/53333. With messing and tweaking i get a max of 54666
On average i get a ping of 180-200 on bw servers after tweaking, but do suffer from some severe packetloss every couple'o'mins.....so......yeh diamond supra would deff be better unless someone knows how to get rid of the packetloss bit

I just got a Pace internal 56k and it is the DOG'S BOLLOCKS!

My ping time has been virtually cut in half, I can easily get 120-135 on BW servers (even with 16 players connected).

Winmodems - just say no, kids

I got a 56K USR Faxmodem flashed V90 (is this one step up from the winmodem i hear you ask) - and a nice long 10M extension cable to the BT phone socket !!!
I always find that wrapping a power cord round the extension cable causes loads of "phone jack" icons ! (obviously)
but dont get many probs otherwise ! (just lucky i guess !)

Yah.. the modem im using atm is a usr 56k... connected to my normal isp the highest connect i can get is 48,000.. connecting to Barrys the highest i get is 33,6.. but... on this weird modem i nabbed off of RedVenom, i connect to my isp at 33,6... i connect to barrys at 48,000 and i connect to WP at 53,666..... and my ping still sits around 170.. ah well. could be something to do with the fact that my poor old 233 cant handle Q2 anymore
