I tried to like it.

And I was. the popup blocker, the gui, the wya it would remember the titles of pages in the dropdown address bar

Then i tried playing some yahoo! pool. And it was shite.
The java plugin rendered small text too small, the sounds were different, windows wouldnt close properly

its probably just because its not a full release? well i hope so because ive gone back to IE for now.

discuss.

Do you know which Java plugin you are using?

*pretends to have a clue, but doesn't actualy bother with many plug-ins*

Hi pcg79

Sorry to hear you didn't like it. You're right in so much that Firebird is still very early on it's development cycle, and it's still riddled with bugs and other flaws. Firebird is a bit of an oddity, though, because it's been hyped by a lot of big names who can see it's potential. I don't doubt it will turn out to be a great browser, it's even my own default browser at present, but it's still too early for people to be recommending it in the way in which they have been doing (in my opinion, at least).

But I'd stay try it again when it's nearing v1.0 (although it may have completely merged with Mozilla by then).

Kind Regards

Firebird is using a different Java plugin from IE. That isn't actually Firebirds fault, the blame falls more with Microsoft, but I have started to realise that most people don't really care about that, they just want things to work.

I use the Java runtime from Sun, it's worked with pretty much everything so far fantastically.

i *think* (off the top of my head, read it somewhere) Firebird is getting merged with mozilla at 1.6 final.

on a similar note, anyone tried thunderbird, the mozilla mail client wotsit? is it any good?

Hello

You're absolutely right, mookie, that Mozilla will merge with the Firebird code-base around v1.6 to become 'Mozilla Browser' :D Whether Firebird and Mozilla Browser will exist side-by-side after this is unclear. Officially they will do, but the two may end up being so similar that we'll be just left with Mozilla Browser. I guess only time will tell.

As for Thunderbird, I can't say I've tried it, but that's even earlier in development than Firebird (v0.1 release candidate has only just been released). I'd be interested to hear people's inpressions, though.

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. As for Java, you should make sure that the old Firebird Java client has been completely removed before using the runtime mentioned above.
P.P.S. For those interested, the third part of an acclaimed Introduction to Thunderbird has just been released.

I think - to alay any fears Phirebird users have about the merger, that Mozilla 1.6 (Mozilla Browser) is actually going to be the release (proper) of Firebird.
The reason for the "merge", is that Mozilla 1.6 is when they plan to have all the current Mozilla features either integrated with Firebird (if deemed "essential") or (as in most cases) once all advanced Moz1.4+ features have been converted into stable Firebird Extensions :)
