I'm back on Win2k now :(

I really need a spare PC to muck about with Linux on, I would have given it more time but I need my PC working like right now so don't have time to muck about :(

I really should get round to installing linux on a spare hdd in the gateway machine downstairs. Kind of scared to do it, last nix OS I used/administrated was HP-UX, and before that AIX (on an IBM RS6000).

Hmmm, I might need you to hold my hand TDC :(

Ideal OS for a gateway.

Heh :D

Thinking of using Slackware (8?). It's what I used many moons ago and I remember liking it alot over various other distros. Thoughts?

hehe well, if you've used UX and AIX then you're scarred for life I'm afraid Perplex :)

anyhoo, on to my thoughts:
slackware is good, it's yummy and works well. I've used it myself. I like it's simplicity, especially when viewed against the concept that several very smart people have worked very hard to keep it as pure as linux can be. it's all in the details no?
downside: for some reason I've gotten it into my skull that the slack project is dead and will no longer be releasing updates to the distribution. [this may or may not be true and besides, it means nothing in computerland: peeps are still writing code for vic's bbc's and suchlike. nothing really dies, it just ages like wine :)[soz, just gotten up heh]]

I use redhat almost exclusivly [when not on BSD hehe] now. The more I use it, the more I discover that RH is wierd and twisted. While making it friendly and fluffy etc. it's become imo overly complicated and waaay too interconnected [just like M$ hehe] But, once it's been made to behave [and you've slapped a good compiler in -for some reason RH always ships with a fscked up compiler] it can be your friend :)

There is also Suse, and LinuxMandrake but others will have to tell you about those.
Lastly there is something called Debian. I know nothing about big D except that it's also very very pure, like Slackware and that it's [said to be] a bit funky. I've never used it, but I know peeps who swear by it.

Several other distro's are out there, some are quite big [like TurboLinux ea.] but they are mostly based off a different distro. Mandrake is actually RedHat [made to behave heh] but it's very well done, thus worth being mentioned.

And sure, I'll help you out if you need assistance, and if I can't chances are someone else here can :)
Go for it and good luck!

Cool beans, ta for the info TDC :) Grabbing Slack8 as we speak. If it turns out to be flakey I'll switch to either Mandrake or maybe Debian if I have the testicular fortitude ;)

I'm a recent convert to Mandrake, the installation procedure is pretty good and (nearly) idiot proof. However, it is based on RedHat and therefore has the same quirks as already pointed out.
