PGP for the masses

Wired have posted an article about how Google may be bringing PGP to Gmail. I know it's freely available but, with browser (read as; Chrome only) integration of your Private Key and some means (social media) of advertising your public key, it seems like a really smart way of finally making PGP easy to use for the masses.

I rarely send any mail worthy of encryption but this seems like a really nice idea.

Would you trust Google with this?

It's a good point actually and I did debate adding that caveat to the end of the post :)

I have a google apps for business account (from when they were free) so that gives you an idea of my stance on this... but I rarely use it for anything worth hiding. If I was using my account for something more sensitive then I would definitely reassess my position.

I've given myself to Google. This is good news.

tbh I'd trust anyone to hold a crypto engine of sufficient robustness for me. since I am not brilliant enough to work out another way, I;ll be happy to use it until some bright spark figures out a way to mess with it. Then I'll use the next thing.

This tbh.

They're compelled by law to hand over shit to US.gov, so there'll be a catch. Otherwise they'd get shut down just like the other encrypted email systems that have gone offline for refusing to hand over keys.

To be honest, its not just Google. Given the evidence of recent events, you can't really entrust any American corporation not to create an access route for your private keys at the behest of the NSA. Despite Snowden etc. absolutely nothing has actually changed.

This sort of stuff is never going to take off until you can do it by just plugging in a yubikey or equivalent. Anything pure software is just going to be broken.
