Just signed up, you get 20 free searches. Useful stuff, although it only tells you what we all know - supermarket fuel is the cheapest :)

Now that I'm back on a diesel, I think I'll be filling up at Asda again :)

I care less about where the cheapest petrol is and more about where the Optimax is. The day I put evil supermarket petrol in my car will be the day that Hell freezes over and I buy a diesel.

Did you watch Fifth Gear the other week Bodhi? It suggested that only cars that can take advantage of higher octane fuel were worth filling up with Super and Optimax (Scoobys and the new Golf GTI etc)

I always put Optimax in my Tiv, but now I'm back on diesel frankly I'll put any old shite in :) Even my beloved veggie oil (50p a litre :D )

Well yeah but the sticker on the inside of my fuel filler cap suggests Super Unleaded only, so I'll listen to that. I filled up with normal once and it was like driving a different car, it sounded laboured near the redline, there was less punch in the midrange and it really didn't like being asked to dig deep. A tank of Optimax later it was back in the rudest of health.

Higher Octane fuels will only benefit cars with knock sensors, others cannot adjust their timing to take advantage of the higher octane. You can pm me your Reg No. if you like and I'll see if your car has a knock sensor when I go to work tomorrow :p

That's not to say that the detergent properties of Optimax like fuels won't benefit a scaggy engine though, but probably no more than a shot of injector cleaner every 10k miles or so would.

I know from various Golf GTI forums that it has a knock sensor. I'd say a 10 year old performance engine deserves just the same care as a brand new one to keep it on form wouldn't you?

Yup, can't hurt.

On the veggie oil, I wouldn't do this apart from on a car I was quite happy to be scrapping, the tolerances in modern diesel injection pumps, or worse on the common rail and direct injection engines are measured in microns. Chip fat is hardly refined to these levels.

Gumbo the engine in my new Merc is your traditional turbo-diesel, with a bloody strong Bosch fuel pump :)

I ran my A4 for ages on veggie oil (although not 100% in this weather), and I never had the slightest problem :)

Golf engines can pink like a bastard if the correct stuff and tune isn't used. I had a 16 valve one and it was a nightmare to set up right. Use Optimax Bods, there is no possible reason why you shouldn't. I personally don't think it will give any bhp increase on a N/A car but its the best peccy out there.

If I put anything other than Opti in my Impreza it was like driving a Robin Reliant.

My new car can only be run on 98 RON, which means Optimax as its 98.6(claimed). I'm fine with that, it just feels weird putting Opti in a N/A car.

Well, best of luck to ya, but the veggie oil craze is the best thing to happen to sales of diesel engine parts since Mr Bosch invented the pump, and as a Bosch agent I'm a happy bunny.

Just make sure you change the fuel filter as often as you change your underwear, and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Be carefull....not all diesel engines can cope with veg oil/biofuel ( all Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda are ok). Its not that they wont run on it, its just that it can break down rubber based components within the fuel system.

Best to check with the manufacturer first and if not then at least wait till its out of warranty.
