Now, why the hell would anyone be interested in playing some 18 year old atari2600 game? They're not, but because LOR is suddenly becoming 'popular' because of the upcoming film, they feel the need to see/play/eat/drink/smell anything that's even slightly connected to LOR, even if this means playing some shite old game that's in the beta stages.

People are idiots, and should be shot, and this i just a small example of it

we'll prolly get hit with a roleplay of it [long in the make, even before the film - really, trust us ;)] before long, unless film-marketing has locked it down.

read the book heh

I was shocked on the bus the other day. I heard two kids. probably about 12, classic Tolkien age, talking about the Lord of the Rings.

Kid A "Have you read Lord of the Rings?"
Kid B "I'm waiting for the film to come out."

Now this depresses me. When I was a kid, I loved reading The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and lots of other fantasy and sci-fi. Do kids parents not encourage them to read anymore? It'd shut the little bastards up, stop them nagging you for a Playstation 2.

Well, i have to admit i've never read LORs...But i do enjoy reading a good book, i just don't enjoy reading fantasy like LOR:p

Kids stopped reading years ago.

All my mates don't read books, nor do they want to (and they're all 20/21 for the most part). They all want to play on the comp. on things like RTCW, Q3, CS, civ., etc and get horrendously drunk and then shag some munting bint. But to be fair, I only read books because I'm doing an English degree.

Age we live in, I know this is cliched to hell, but it just isn't the age where books are one of the things parents encourage kids to do. And even if they did, the kids would prolly just tell the parents to shut-up and go earn money for their next PS2 or PC fix.

Hobbit ruled by the way.

Well, then parents need educating *sigh*

Let's start here. Everyone here who's a father, give you kids some books for Christmas. Everyone else, promise me to encourage your kids to read (if/when you get any).

Thanks ;)

And did you not think The Simarillion sucked?

I only read books with pictures. I shall encourage my kids to do the same. Words are just far too much effort.

See, I can do serious.:)

Unfinished tales was more of the same. It was good, but just not as mind-blowing as Lord of the Rings.

it absolutely awed me to realise that Mr. Tolkien had given thought to where characters had been in relation to a given location, and what they had been doing at the time, out of story focus and all. incredible. made me feel tiny, looking at the sheer scale of the man's thinking.

Did it not all grow out of bed time stories he told his son/grandson?

Yeah, Hobbit was from bedtime stories. LOR was something a bit more complex.

Heh (here comes the English Student shit!), Tolkien fought in WWI and saw a lot of his m8s die in the trenches, etc. He was also very disillusioned with the Cummunist state emerging and with WWII and the resulting devastation in Europe felt quite depressed about the whole 'life' malarky.

Hence LOR is about a group of people, from different races, etc. coming together to fight a totalitarian evil. Well, that and an obvious hard on for elves.

This whole thing about people digging out stuff that is ages old simply because it is related to some film that is coming out... Did none of you guys raid your attic to try and find old, dust covered Star Wars toys when you heard the new film was coming out? And then promptly bury them in the garden in a fit of tears when you saw Ja Ja in the film? I don't think its people being sheep, I think its a good thing. And if it stops kids reading PowerRangers the novel or I Still Have A Strong Suspicion Of What You Did Last Summer 3, I think its all fine and dandy. Yeah, the majority of people are Sheep, thats why we have GAP adverts and how come Titanic didn't get firebombed in the cinemas, and how Creole earrings and clown necklaces sell by the shovel load, but you can't change that. At least this is the wooly masses reading a blinding book, and the game, hell I liked it on the Spectrum.

Anyway people, Mrs Kenny is running away now. Leaving this site for safer pastures. I read "the rise and fall of forums" and its given me the fear. You guys play rough, and I don't know the rules. My cyber speak extends to "lol" and "wtf" and I don't wanna be flame grilled for inadvertant uNfing (wtf?) or ziiiping (?!?). Play nicely boys. And look after my favourite buttplug.

Agreed. People are sheep, and it pisses me off too. I've even got to the point of purposely not liking popular things just because they're popular.

The most recent example is this David Beckham thing. All of a sudden, everyone loves him, its pathetic. To me, hes still the stupid twat who screwed up our World cup chances last time round. BBC Sports personality of the year, wtf?? He has about as much personality as an avocado.

Tolkein was also a linguistics professor and "invented" several languages, LotR was in one way a vehicle for these.

I don't blame 12yo for not reading LotR books, I remember struggling with it at 11yo, took me about 3 goes to get all the way through it. Its full of mind-numbingly boring parts and that f*cking poetry does my head in.

Hobbit was a nice book but could have been half the size.

If you want really tough read go for The Simarillion (sp?), which is like a "bible" of the LotR universe, covering the beginning of the world and stuff like that.

I've only read the first two episodes (fellowship & the towers?) & the hobbit, and that was when I was about 12-13. I've got them all in one fat trilogy book, and it was always quite hard to get around the idea of reading it. Having said that, I regularly read similar length books now. (Pratchett/Holt/Rankin/Clive Barker, or whatever his name is)

I like books :(
