ooh err, it seems old Intel is going to smash the 100W dissapation barrier with upcoming cpus. it seems quite hard to get non-leaky kit at the level of uber thin-ness the new chips will be fabbed at. full article here.

Looks like AMD are going the other direction, and in any case, Intel have to power boost their 32-bit line as they don't think much of 64-bit, apparently.

Only half-related, but Intel yesterday announced the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor Extreme Edition 3.20 GHz supporting Hyper-Threading Technology1, with an additional 2 Megabytes of cache. At the moment it's just a paper launch, with the chips not actually available, but it's certainly an interesting move, especially since "This new processor will be targeted at high-end gamers and computing power users."

hehe I doubt it will cost all that much more than the normal 3.2Ghz did when it was launched, and it's only going to have a fairly short shelf life (in terms of being superseded) before Intel's other new chips are launched. And besides, we mere mortals aren't their target audience (like this Gainward offering).

indeed I'll just get the regular thing and be happy

still...the word is that the "extreme edition" 3.2Ghz PIV is a redone xeon core in a different jacket.
the word also is that it's going to cost about 200 dollars more than the 3.0Ghz PIV (~$700 iirc?)

thus...if it is a repackaged Xeon with some added bells then it's a lovely price because the PIV's big brother weighs in at around 3500 dollars if I'm not mistaken.

it's L3 cache, Xeons have 512kb or 1Mb of L2 Cache... the extra L3 amounts to an extra 100M transistors bringing the total transistor count to 144M - triple the original transistor count

I'm actually out at IDF at the mo where the chip was launched, so expect a truck load of info in an hour or two
