I installed this firewall tonight as a way of protecting myself when downloading torrent's from public index sites like TPB and Mininova. Upon starting Peerguardian and loading a couple of torrents up I was gobsmacked by the amount of connections it blocked, mainly to anti-p2p company's like Media Sentry. It really is quite scary how many of the torrents on public sites are being monitored by the anti-p2p/anti-piracy groups and it is so easy for them to track you down via your i.p. address. No wonder there are so many p2p lawsuits ongoing at the moment, downloading torrents leaves you wide open to being tracked and prosecuted.

My advice, if you download from public indexes then either install something like Peerguardian or find a site that provides an ipfilter.dat for your bittorrent client and is updated frequently.

Stopped using torrents years ago, not because of this, but because generally they're a bit shit.

The wording is the problem.
If you're using torrents, Emule, DC etc etc then you're having to contribute part of what you're downloading for the system to work. You are in effect actively participating in copyright infringement when using such system to download copyright media.

Using a server download system like newsgroups removes this definition because you never share the file back out. You couldn't be accused of file *sharing*.

Both are morally questionable (is it theft or isn't it?), but it doesn't stop millions of people on a daily basis.

idd. and torrents are slow. you can join private forums but then you're limited to what you can download, and when i did i downloaded something nobody else wanted meaning i couldnt seed it and get my ratio back.

and on rapidshare i can get 10mbs instantly :D

Yeah from the people I am speaking to on private ratio sites it is a MUST for downloading off public indexes.

Agreed. I'd blame your connection not torrents, mine are extremely quick.

If i download something thats new and popular its fine because there's loads of seeds, but that's rarely the case.

I dont know if im being paranoid but PeerGuardian has crashed a lot of times on my machine and only when im using torrents. Most mornings i get what i want through Hotfile and PeerGuardian will be fine. If i start a torrent i will log on to my machine and find it has crashed. I have reinstalled both PG and Torrent clients but still get it. Like i say im prolly Paranoid but it seems weird.

I only use private torrent sites and I still get a lot of blocked connections on PG so definitely install it!! :D

Also use rapidshare, but the 720p and 1080p content you find there is limited. (or I haven't found the right sites yet :( )

No I am getting the same, I also notice since I installed peer guardian that when I start my machine up kerio personal firewall does not auto start anymore, so I have to feck about with it.

Is Peerguardian working these days?

While back it wasn't worth it as it caused a bit of problems.

About D/L speeds, 5 minutes /short shows.

I think PeerGuardian is fine and other than it crashing it has never caused me a problem. That being said i would love a torrent client that has an auto update feature on a ipfilter utorrent loads one at start up seemingly but i have never found where form or how to update it.

I never had any problems with it at all tbh. Using it for 2 years or so now i think.

well they were talking about public torrents so :p
private torrents are awesome, and i was using them for a while, but i think newsgroups take the cake.
fast releases (same as or faster than private torrent/p2p sites) and none of the problems with asynchronous connections - currently i have a 12mbit dl 768 kbit ul (soon getting 100/20 mbit), and that sucked for seeding torrents. especially when you like to view lots of series in HD. i could get the releases relatively fast, yet seeding them back took a lot of time. downloading a 720p episode takes either 10 or 20 minutes depending on the length of it, but seeding the same amount back takes 2-4 hours, using your whole upstream. just too much hassle (for me) that can be avoided by using newsgroups

Peer Block works with everything - apparently

Yep I just switched to that about 10 days ago, works better than Peerguardian (no crashes so far) and it works great in windows 7. :)
