PCMCIA card troubles

ive just obtained my first laptop, so im still figuring out everything atm, the problem is with the PCMCIA card.

unfortunately the machine came only preloaded with win98 and some gfx drivers, so ive been trying to sort out this card and get drivers for it

i seem to have the right drivers for the PSION card, and when windows detected the card i pointed it to the location of the drivers, it seemed to find the correct ones, and everything installed ok.

but now when im trying to connect up my modem, i dont get a connection or anything, although the modem detects a connection to the PC, and the data light starts flickering away, and the connection on the pcmcia card does the same, but i just dont get a connect.

as far as i can see the adapters are set up correctly, and bound to the correct protocols, but nothing happens :(

ive discovered a little diagnostic program that came with the drivers, and when running that i get a couple of messages
(CARD) unknown EXCA chipset
possibly unsupported PCMCIA interface

now as far as i know this card came with the original machine, so surely should be supported?

anyone got any ideas what could be the problem?
OS is Win98, card is PSION DACOM 56k + 10MB ethernet
and neither the PSION or Dell (make of laptop) sites seem to offer much advice

From my experience with our 20+ Dell 3800 all with Win98, there is only one answer

Laptop + Win98/ME = Unimaginable Pain
