PC Resetting?

My stuff - P4 2.4, Gainward Ge Force 4600, 256pc2100 DDR ram(Kingston), 60gb Maxtor HD, Abit IT7-Max2 mobo, Windows XP(with service pack).

Perhaps two or three times a day, while online(never happened at any other time), my PC resets, it tends to be when I click on a link or attempt to download something. Any ideas?

I have something similar with w2gh3y. the os just 'freezes'. doesn't happen in the other two oses I tripleboot with.

Dont even bother touching ME trem I think you should reinstall XP or just have a check for any hardware conflicts. I had some freezing and restarting and i found out my raid drivers were playing up. Just have a check through it all ;)

as jis says, no me mate! me bad!

here's a link to dualbooting MS products

remember, install old to current for MS. if dualbooting MS-Other install the MS product first as MS will usually either kill off the other OS or refuse to boot with it. Other OSes will usually detect your MS install and set up a bootmanager to allow working with it.

If the PC resets, i.e. does a warm reboot as if the reset button was pressed, then it may not necessarily be an OS problem. I'd eliminate the hardware first before you start re-installing.

Check your power lines using a motherboard monitor, in particular the 5V line, if its down to 4.7V when under load then you may need a bigger PSU.

It has only started doing it since I got this mobo Jis, how in gods name do I check the Raid stuff though?

And also Cama I am sure I may need a bigger PSU, although it seems to have run fine since day one with this PSU.

Hmmmmm Raid may be the way to go if only I knew how to check it:(

Thanks for the link as well TDC, I will ponder on it later.

Try lowering your FSB and mem speed by a fair amount for a while. See if that makes any difference. That should correct most hardware tolerence faults (heat, power etc...) If that runs stable for a night or two then you need to start working out which bit of hardware is at fault.

My guess is the memory if you've just put a new mobo in. DDR sticks are very fussy about which boards they will run on.

When I had problems with the 300W PSU I was using I had been running the machine for around 2 months in the same configuration, in fact the machine was on 24/7, one evening I move the mouse, the screen comes back and then it cuts out, from that point on I had the +5V line problems I detailed in a previous thread.

You sure your not getting a blue screen, but being automatically restarted?

  • Press WinKey + Break/Pause
  • Go to Advanced
  • Startup & Recovery > Settings
  • Automatically Reboot - untick

Next time it happens you will get a BSOD with a pretty Comic Sans font, post what it says...

hmmm, i recall getting a few blue screens when i reset my computer, by shutting down or Resetting, when my computer would boot up again, it would go into Scandisk no matter what.

So, instead of Shutting Down/Resetting i used Hibernation Mode (Win2000) which made it all OK, but, when software wanted the comp to be restarted it would crash again.

I formatted computer and everything has been hunky dorey since

Dont know if this will help but....

I used to get endless blue screens/resets just browsing, playing or whatever. I have a Geforce 4 4600, 2x 256 ddr pc2100 cas2.5 ram.

I took one dimm out and it never got a blue screen but with 2 it would always randomly reset. However i found a solution. In the bios change the memory latency from 2.5 to 2 (providing u have cas 2.5 ram anyway). My computer has never crashed since, running a beut now :). My problem was with 2 dimms tho, since you have 1 i dont know if it will work the same.

anyway dunno if this will help or not wont harm trying tho (well it shouldnt).

I think everybody else has covered everything in its entirety, so its pointless bringing anything new in, especially detailing everybodies elses posts of:

  • Reset your memory timings - Mas-
  • Disable "Auto Restart" for when you get BSOD - PR
  • Try a new PSU - Camatoz :p (or Xane if he gets a bit edgy over it all)
  • Lower your FSB and memory speed temporarily to see if it stops - Wij
  • Format your machine and rebuild - Super_Gay
  • install another operating system and duel-boot to check - TDC

You could even try the following.. if your daring enough

  1. Disable ACPI in Bios
  2. Re-install any motherboard or graphics card drivers ( Via 4-in-1 / Nvidia Detonator / ATI Catalyst )
  3. move PCI cards about in their slots (sound card bottom slot, network/modem middle slot, etc) leaving the PCI beneath the AGP card empty
  4. get some ancient herbs and a cauldron, light 6 white candles in a pentagram (right-way up!) and chant a mysterious healing spell with the computer in the middle, on the top of a wind-swept moor, wearing nothing, offering yourself to the wicca goddess... wait im rambling
    [/list=1]

Edit:// I hope you have plugged the extra P4 connector from your PSU onto your motherboard as well :)
    Edit2:// happy TDC?

I'd only get edgy if you'd actually spelt my former name correctly :)

because you're gh3y ?

I'd be inclined to think the PSU route... I had the same thing happen after hooking up a 2nd chasis fan to cool my overclock before it shorted out completely (silly poofy 300w shite) a nice 400W PSU sorted that out.

nah trem the lockups that I had were caused by the raid array that i created..im sorry to say that your pc problem could be anythink :(

What psu do you have ? 300w should be fine as im pretty sure thats what you have. But sort ure self out with a nice 550w psu ;) go on u know u wanna take the piss.

Try resinstalling with out the xp service pack ive heard it can cause people a few problems but then saying that microsoft cause alot of people problems.
