I had a similar problem, reformatted a number of times before I tried a full format, hey presto up it came.

Try getting HD utilities for your hard drive, and make sure you wipe it totally clean, not a soft format.

Hope this helps

Andy When u say a full format do u mean when u totaly whipe the hard disk all the partitions and everything.
Well if it is that then i have already tried that.

Thanx for helping me :)

Is your PC overclocked m8? Cuz you get that kinda shit happening if it's overclocked too far but especially if it's running too hot.

Open ya case and check that the fan on the CPU cooler is working. If not, that might be the cause of your probs.

Also, sometimes PSU's cause probs like that when they're ready to die..

Might also be worth trying different memory.
When I was running 98 I kept getting Windows protection errors, and after much f***ing around, it was down to a dodgy DIMM.

Just a suggestion ;)

...heh heh heh....
I feel for you bud (not literaly) I've had this more times than I'd care for (but only once on mine, 3/4 times on 'er indoors).
What I found was that the SDRAM that I installed was different from the original RAM (different speeds...and size...and type...heh) and it conflicted with the BIOS settings.
A Windows Protection Error is usually driver related but it might not be a missing/corrupt driver (*.vxd) [obvious now that you've formatted] it could just be the BIOS settings. In my dealings with this issue it was the SDRAM speed setting:
1)Fast
2)Medium
3)Slow
it was on Fastest by default but the Windows Protection Error stayed until I set the speed to slow.

If this doesn't work try loading the default settings for your BIOS and try it again....if this doesn't work I'd fart about with your BIOS settings (within reason) and try again...
...and again...
......then.....
...start looking at your hardware.

You should know if you've installed new hardware.

Good luck, keep bobbing up for air.

VXD= Virtual device driver. If yer pc's getting nowhere near the OS try going to the bios and select the option to force update ESCD (Extended System Config. Data). Some times with fucked up/conflicting hardware this has helped me out, not sure why though.... Tug should enlighten us soon ;)

this may help

ive had problems like this b4..
OK if the isdn adapter has any hardware jumper settings leave um as they are for the moment..
Take out al other hardware... soundcard normall modem etc etc apart from the graphichs card if nessary..
then use a floppy disk to boot up your system in DOS
type
FDISK
delete the primary partition then after its gone ..
Create a primaray partition.....
Then restart useing the disk still.. goto dos and type format c:
etc etc to format it..
now the disk should be totally clean.. right now..

Reinstall windows 98

Make sure its on max install or all custom options are installed...
NOW afetr the reinstall load up windows if it loads and works fine.. use the ms ISDN config to get the adapter working (it should of done this when reinstalling)

Now shutdown
add 1 of you other cards to your computer. and bootup..
If it still works GREAT. install all drivers and then shutdown..
repeat this until you have installed all hardware..
Now the point of this is to see if any of the hardware is stopping windows from loading if you find one that it is.. look for jumper settings on the hardware.. change um so it doesnt conflict with any other hardware installed.

hopefully this helped unless you had it fixed b 4 i typed this..
lol

e-mail me grahamzim1@x-stream.co.uk for more help i might b able to help ya.
have fun..
i hate it when my comp fuckes up. :-(

Do u have the BT speedway ISDN card?

There are some problems with that sometimes - it can be a pain to install - i've been there, but never quite this bad.

I would remove the cards etc..as said before, and install one at a time after a format..got to use the basic fault finding routine here I reckon.

This may be too old

but i know how to fix it i think
its your irq settings and you have to go into bios
(press delete at start)
look for irq and it says
configure manually or let the computer do it
let the computer do it unless you know what to do
what happens is you bt speedway took up the same irq # as some other pci cards and when you let the computer sort them it will switch them all about
and that will sort it without you having to format

yeh, sounds like an IRQ thang. Had the same probs when I got a new mobo, came up with the protection error after 2 or 3 installs of windoze.

Whipped out me LAN card and it worked fine (after another installation). Bunged it back in and installed the drivers, windows still worked but came up with a (expected) hardware conflict.

I then changed the interrupt requests for it and all's been working fine, well as far as Win98 allows :p
