I recently updated my ATI Drivers and now I have two unknown devices detected that I have no idea what they are.

I have tried removing the graphics from the device manager and remvoed the driver and reinstalled it but I still have two unknown devices.

Any ideas how to solve?

do you mean unknown to you or your computer?

If this is XP simply remove them and refresh, I found out after a recent motherboard upgrade that XP doesn't forget about unconnected devices the same way that earlier Windows does.

My previous setup had a soundcard and LAN which were replaced by the built-in devices in the new motherboard, they appeared in device manager as "unknown", in the properties box it listed the PCI slot number which gave their origins away.

Here goes...

In the Device Manager, uninstall all the unknown devices, then go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall the ATI Control Panel and the ATI Display Drivers.

Do all of the above before restarting your computer.

When Windows restarts, if it automatically asks you to install drivers, select Cancel. Then check the Device Manager if the unknown devices have reappeared. If they have, uninstall them again, but don't restart your computer yet. Now install the ATI drivers again (ATI display drivers first, then ATI Control Panel, restarting as prompted for each). :)

See if that works :)

Damn Damn

I did what you said above plus.

When I rebooted it had a new ati driver in place I deleted this then rebooted, finally it asked for the new driver so I did cancel and installed the up to date ones.

Still I have two unknown bloody devices gonna try one more time uninstalling the hardware that exsists and setup properly related to the g-card.

Nop no joy.

Also now get "Error this service is not working properly" messages on start up no idea what they are seem to do with ati additional services tho.

This is so much bloody hassle next time Ill just buy Geforce, Im nurfed for choosing something different that seemed a good idea at the time :-/.

You don't need too.

Just put the XP cd in and reboot. Press any key when prompted.

If it's XP Home, it may not let you with the upgrade version. MS may have limited the upgrade path for 2000 to go to Pro only - I believe this is documented on the packaging.

PS. Please start new threads for this kinda thing, since your post had nought to do with ATI drivers.

I dont really know about xp as I havent had it for long..but I have had ati and nv driver updates with crap from the past rearing its ugly head once uninstalled.

If the removed drivers are reinstalling themselves !pfffftt! !wtf! try to find the .inf files for the problem driver/bogus device using a search *.inf and remove them.

iirc, nvidia inf files have the nv prefix. For ati ...you have ati*.inf...do a search, then try to find the version of the problem driver and delete (or if your para, rename it to a .txt for restoration later - beware the inf for the driver you have just updated will be knocking around somewhere..obv, dont delete that). Remove the troublesome driver, reboot and hopefully the nasties will be no more.

I just did a complete reinstall of everything. Everything works fine with the new drivers after deleting the old ones but I still have two unknown devices directly as a result of the new driver. So basically fuck it gonna leave it cause it works fine, if it didnt I would go back to the old ones.

Thanks alot guys for your help.
