Got my bank statement this morning, someone has used my account details to make a paypal payment of £107.50 to *MIKEROGERS according to my statement. The thing is, I never ever use that bank account for making any internet payments of any type, I do all my internet shopping with a VISA card so I am certain that someone out there has my bank account details and is using them to make charges via Paypal/Maestro.

So far I have spoken to my bank, they told me to speak to Paypal. Now Paypal tell me that they will investigate but it will take up to 3 days which leaves me with my arse hanging in the wind until they get back to me. Can anyone advise on how I should proceed with this? I really need to protect my account and also get back the money they have already taken.

Well your bank should have put a stop on any transactions because of suspected fraud, confirm that with them.

do you use a debit visa card linked to that account online?

1: Change your password from a different computer you normally use.
Do not type that password anywhere in your regular computer. They got in your account somehow, and mostly that's done by sniffing your password using a keylogger.

2: Sweep your entire computer with a proper virus scanner. (Panda isn't proper. Kaspersky has my preference, but to each their own ofcourse). Many scanners like Kaspersky and Symantec have a free online virus scanner which you can use.

3: Use common sense while computing. Don't go open that "britney_spears_naked.jpg.bat.exe" attachment you received from Johnny.

4: Pray that Paypal has a good day. Too many horror stories floating around about them.

I got £700 lifted from my account a few years back, luckily i was online with outlook open at the time, 2 Paypal transactions came through for about $500 each, turns out they hacked my eBay account and, yes like and idiot, my eBay passwords were all the same as my Paypal ones and they got lucky

I contacted Paypal by phone immediatly and they halted the transaction, and they e-mailed me an afer-david (sp) that i had to print off, fill out and sign, then snail mail it back to them, also i had to freeze my bank account

It took about 3 weeks to sort out. Now the money did leave my account but didnt get to the culprits, it was in limbo with Paypal, i got it recredited back to my account, but i lost about £13.00 on each one cos of the excange rate, but they did say that there was nothing they could do about it and to be thankful i got most of it back

They were pretty good tbh, but i did catch it the second it happened as the e-mail conformations came through to me

Just had the bank account locked for card transactions, the card is Maestro and it looks like the details have been used on someone elses Paypal account. The payment does not show on my own Paypal account and Paypal have confirmed that my account never processed that transaction, they are now going to investigate and see where my money went but it could take days which is pathetic because they have a time and date for the transaction and an amount plus name *MIKEROGERS, surely they must be able to run a search based those details.

Got avast running a full scan now, going to do a boot time scan tonight as well. After that I will do a full Spybot scan and hope for the best. I am majorly paranoid now though, I use my credit card alot for internet shopping and I have a large credit limit so I could get stung badly if they have those details too. :(

Looks like my format and Windows 7 install is going to be brought forward a week or two just so I can rest easy knowing my PC isn't compromised.

If it's jsut your meastro card that has been used, it is more likely that someone cloned your card or got your details from somewhere you shop offline.

report it to trading standards through consumer direct, or direct to your t.s. dept if possible, giving them the info.
they might be able to link a few things together with the mike rogers info.

Gotta agree with Chet here aswell. They would most likely have used the creditcard if they had that info. It's easier, and gives less feedback to the owner. Also, you just stated that they used the maestro info in a diff. paypal account...

They probably used a card cloning thingy or something.

Alot of people digging through trash for bank details and such these days, shred/burn your bank details make absolutely sure your name/dob etc isnt shown on ANY mail even the most simple of letters/bills.

I shred my mail now or rip off my name etc from it and important information like national insurance number etc. Asylum seekers and typical fraudsters go through any lengths for a few extra bob.

I have never had it with PayPal but i would imagine its the same as any other fraud. Report it to your banks fraud department who will ditch the card and arrange for a new one. They will then investigate the transaction and if they find it to be fraudulent they will send you a declaration of fraud for you to sign and after that refund the money.

From how i understand it investigating is just looking for patterns so if you use paypal on that card all the time it might delay things.

Is horrible. We had 4 k taken from our current account 2 Christmases ago in 2 consecutive 'one off' standing orders that had been set up by an African man. It was my fault as I had responded to a phishing scam before I realised what it was .I felt such an idiot.
