do i need a passport to travell to southern ireland? as its a different country ect

to me - ROI is a DIFFERENT country to the UK and therefore passports would be required.

Until a few years ago you could go to the Republic with just your driving licence as ID (and if you're from NI you still can), but the law was changed a few years ago. Don't know why, "security" probably, but maybe an EU thing because the UK isn't a Schengen country.

No, you don't need your passport for going to ROI.

You can use a driving licence. Another thing, AT ALL COSTS keep any any bits of paper from ticket chits etc when you land so they can identity which flight you came from, many uk airports have a special aisle for flights from Ireland, and British Crown dependencies.
