I dont think you need a passport...but I think it would be best if you called the Belfast 24-hour Passport Adviceline: 0870 521 0410

Found this out about Getting to Ireland:

Inside United Kingdom: Crossing the Border

Land Border: The United Kingdom has just one land border, with the Republic of Ireland. A reciprocal agreement is in place between the countries to allow passage from one nation to the other, of UK and Irish citizens, without passport checks (identification documents should be carried). However, other nationalities are not subject to this waiver and normal passport checks are in operation.

Arriving by ferry, air or train: These are the three main methods of entry into the UK. All citizens of the EEA (EU nations plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, San Marino and Andorra) are allowed free passage, right of abode and have the right to work into the UK without impedance. A showing of your passport at Border Control is usually all that's needed and registration with your local JobCentre and Social Security Office.

Non-EEA citizens and nationals have different entry requirements, though for citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, a Visa Waiver Program operates. This entitles the holder to 90 days as a tourist in the UK without needing a visa. You must prove you have sufficient funds for your stay and show a return ticket to Immigration Officials, if asked to do so.

I know but these "irish" may have funny ideas...

:twak:

you deserve that you spaz

I suspect the 24hr helpline is the call centre I used to work in many years ago down in Bangor, Northern Ireland... always funny listening to irate callers from Kent complaining about having to go to Glasgow for theirs.

You need photo-id like a driving licence if you are using one of the budget carriers to fly across, airlines normally ask for passports as its the only uniform photographic ID they like to recognise. Taking the conventional ferry service means you do not need photographic ID (unless things have changed recently)

I've just been in N.Ireland for the last week, all you need is photographic ID. Passport is best, but a photographic driving licence will be fine.

I hope you have now left our fine shores

Your shores are indeed very fine. Its a beautiful country, and everyone there was incredibly nice and helpful. The woman at the burger stand behind my camera position (I was filming the NW200) even gave me a free cup of tea, which goes against the laws of physics or something.

If I could get work there, I'd move there. And the quality of the housing is breathtaking.
