Parry

Just hit lvl 15 and have not got the ability to Parry. Had a quick look at details and it says

This ability grants you a base chance of 5% to deflect blows with your weapon, modified by the level difference between you and your attacker. Furthermore, each point you put into parry adds .5% chance to deflect blows.

There has been some discussion as to whether holding a shield effects the chance to parry.

So should I train in it, does it help. I have a medium Shield ATM and quite like to use it for Blocks and Lunge, anyone give me some info/feedback please.

Just train in shield spc. That's the best :)

yup 5% + 0.5% x skill lvl base chance then modified by dex lvl difference.

There is a bug with 2 handed parrying atm fixed in 1.47

But as for shield affecting parry chace no dont think so.

Differnet types of shield get different mods for blocking spd and dps

large best for blocking slow spd where small is woest for blocking and high spd

I do not think that a Warden can train in Sheild Spec, I do block and have follow up Combat Styles that require a block to use.

I will investigate the Parry route, I have made a few successful Parry blocks, but am not sure if any styles require this.

Parry is a trainable skill which you should be able to get from your trainer.

As a sword/shield hero I train left over points in parry and at level 22 have a skill of 9 in parry. I parry on average 1 or 2 attacks per mob, so it's not massively useful - I block a lot more as I am full spec in shields.

Templates I have seen:

At level 20 - 5 in Parry.
At level 50 - around 25 in parry.

These are just bits I have seen from 'warden guides' (see
http://www.castlecor.org/Sage/daoc_links.htm) - one of these guides gives a couple of suggested templates for healer/buffer/tank wardens. Have a look for yourself and see what fits the way you play :)

Hi,

What styles, I had a quick check could only see styles that required Block, does Parry come under this as it does say you Block or you Parry?

Thanks!

Bah Don't bother with parry - 15ish at the most really. You will hardly parry in RvR anyway. Parrying with 2hers is also broken atm - you should parry more with them. If you can use 2h - use it. sword and shield is great for PvE but is just useless RvR

None of the weapon styles require parry - at least not on Hibernia anyway :)

Sword and Shield useless in RvR - not what I've heard from reliable sources. Player attacks you, block, block, block, block, hit, block, block etc - meanwhile you are whitling away their hits. And of course don't forget a nice shield slam to leave them stunned :)

EDIT: and of course its always nice to have your shield blocking arrows being fired at you - 2handers won't have that either.

Parry - as I said - any spare points, but certainly not a 'key' skill.

Can't speak from experience, but as I say reliable sources i.e. high level RvR'ers

lol
blocks only work against non - styles ie non tank people
you will hardly ever block another tank styling against you - you have just the bog standard 5% chance of blocking however much you train in shield. (same with parry). As for arrows in 2hers - If you have any sense you train shield to 7 and walkaround with it. Pop a guard on a caster and if anyone attacks you/the caster you just engage the archer - bye bye archer. I have been slammed by a similar conned enemy before and still won with ease simply because his dmg is nowhere near like mine is. I know many sword and shielders lvl50 who are just looking for those respecs so they can go 2h

I think theres a blunt style that needs parry

to answer Chuci's question as a fellow Warden, my parry is 10, and will prolly stay there, until I have all the stuff I need / can get, then I'll throw the rest in Parry.

Ok thanks all,

I chose Blades and have trained that each level so far, maybe not the best thing to do but suits my style ATM

Out of interest Cedig what is your training path?

Entire chain based on parry if large weaponry specced. (not possible if warden I know but since the thread is on parry)

Celtic Rage - Hibernian Vigor - Gigantic Blow.

At lvl 39 my parry is at 17 and Id say quite useless....in exping I use other styles and to swap to that chain when actually parrying is not worth it IMO. And hopefully I have one of my loooooovely S/S hero friends beside me that keep aggro and let me do side chain instead

There's also a Celtic Dual chain off Parry (Tornado-Meteor Shower-Twin Star). As a blademaster I try to use my parry and evade chains whenever I can in PvE, they're more endurance efficient and you can't always count on having a bard handy :)

Of course in RvR there's never time for these niceties - I just spam out Hurricanes and hope for the best!

Its just me being lazy, you are very right on the endurance issue...I keep doing 2 -3 styles when having aggro and the parry chain is not on that hotbar...changing hotbar and getting the right style away while spamming Domination style is a bit to much for little me ;)

You high level types have too many styles available, that's why :)

My default XPing hotbar can (just) fit Hurricane (for any time damage), taunt, a two-style side position combo, a two style evade combo and a two style parry combo. I only need to change bars to sprint or activate triple wield. This isn't going to work as I level and some of these chains grow, I know.

Kind of off topic, but as a BM I find I live or die by my Parry skill and the styles I chain off it, especially as they include a (damn too short duration) stun effect. I also hear that upcoming US patches make Parry and Block more likely in RvR - not that we're going to see those patches any time soon, :(
