Crap Ow!

Was out on the bike and had to readjust my front wheel. Don't know what exactly happened but I felt a sharp finger pain and pulled my hand back to find I've ripped my fingernail off.

It's still a little bit attached at the front but it was pulled nazi-torture style out of the bit in your finger it grows from. Bled a lot too

So, I've rinsed it under the tap (the skin underneath is *really* sensitive) and pushed the fucker back into my finger.

What next?

Ignore? Docs? Quick A&E?

Wouldn't say A&E, but worth getting your GP to look at it. Your nail will grow back if your fingernail bed is intact, but it'll probably be weird shaped and sore as it does so.

My toenail fell of last year... It was oddly painless, took my sock off my one night and it was kind of hanging a bit and then it just... fell off.. I think it had been like it a while though because it wasn't mad sensitive underneath. But I can imagine it stings like a bitch if it is new. :\

I don't think putting the nail back on will do any good now. Savlon spray or some other antiseptic, make sure its clean as hell, bandage it up & phone the NHS helpline & see what they say.

it's going to have to come off. the nail that is, not your finger. though come to think of it, if you cut off all your fingers and toes, you'll never have nail problems again! to the shears!!!

Yeah. Washed it and reinserted the nail to where it should be (it's not broken, just detached almost everywhere apart from a bit at the front that I'll have to tear if I want to get it off).

I wanged it in a cup of TCP for a while and my whole body now completely mings of it.

Then I went out and got shitfaced at a cocktail bar for a mate's fucking-off-to-Oz-for-life do. It was rammed full of totty too

I've gotta nip to the doctors tomorrow morning anyway and this has given me the impetus not to put it off. I'll ask him whether I should tear it off or not and won't feel guilty that I'm wasting his time.

Still, the nail does look like I've had some really cool zombie makeup job done...

Trying to put it back is much like plucking a hair and then trying to put it back in. It's not going to work.

Get rid of it and let a new one grow.

It'll grow back. The skin underneath the old one will desensitise over the next day or two. You wont notice/care in a week. Just keep it clean til it's sealed itself off properly, wear a plaster/bandage for the first day or two.

I put it back simply because it affords protection to the otherwise exposed sensitive skin that's usually under the nail. I'm well aware that it's not going to magically re-attach itself and start growing.

Clean it looks a lot less manky than no nail at all...

Nails are just like hair. Providing you haven't damaged the bit the nail comes out of, it'll grow back.
