Havent slept a wink all night, one side of my face has been an absolute bitch with constant throbbing. Took an Anadin Extra but it had absolutely no effect on the pain, bollocks!

Its an understatement to say i really dont like Dentists, but i might have to bite the bullet with this one. For about 2-3 years ive been living with 2 cracked teeth [One on each side of my mouth] pretty much mirroring each other, recently however one [or both?] have started to break up into small fragments.

Which means i probably unearthed a really nasty nerve. The last time i went the Dentist [We're talking about 2000 here] the bastard really hurt me, i just hope treatment has come a long way since then! Because the tooth seems to have cracked in half, i really doubt if there can be any filling put into it [them]

I would have tried to be brave [honest] where i try to knock out the tooth myself, but i just envisioned a huge nerve coming out with the tooth as well with loads of blood. Nooo.

PS, since the last time i went to a dentist i was about 16 or something, ive never actually gone being classed as an "adult". Do you just call through to the dental surgery and make an appointment as per usual? The only thing i was mainly worried about is the cost of any treatment - Does this get covered via the NHS or out of your own pocket?

... Now to find some stronger painkillers...

Ibroprufen work well - as well as killing the pain (mostly) they're an anti-inflammitory so will take down some of the swelling involved at the same time.

I would probably think it would be better to try the doctors lie "It won't hurt a bit" but in all honesty thing's haven't changed much at all since 2000. However, you really need to look at the future - the crunch and 30 seconds of pain followed by 20 hours of numb face - followed by years of hopefully not seeing the bastard who did it again - of course minus the pain and inconvenience.
Otherwise, you'll forgo the dentist, that 30 seconds of pain - and have years of annoyance and pain every time you bite into a digestive biscuit. Not to mention those bastard bits of coconut, rice or peanuts you get stuck in the gaps and you spend half your day trying to prise it out with your tongue. Which hurts.

Just go get it done for your own sake.
As far as cost - despite being covered by the NHS there's a standard fee - i think there's 2 bands of treatment, one is £16 the other is £43 - which depends on the type / amount of work being done. However if you're on the dole or something I suspect it's free, rather like prescriptions.

First off, painkillers....your best bet is to take nurofen AND paracetamol....400mg nurofen 8 hourly and 1g paracetamol 4-6 hourly. Stagger them so you can take stuff throughout the day.
Second off...the dentist. You'll be bloody lucky to find an NHS dentist that deals with adults. Try google searching your local area for a list of dentists and that should tell you whether you have any NHS dentists in your area taking new adult patients. IF you find one, ring up and make an initial appt. They won't do any treatment, so nothing will hurt, but they will assess your mouth, treatment you'll need and give you an approximate cost for the ENTIRE course of treatment, ie, it could and probably will, take more than one session. Even though some of the cost will be covered by the NHS, you'll have to pay for some of it. If you hate dentists as much as I do, it might be worth seeing if you can find one with a nervous patient programme. IF you admit to them that you're nervous and that you've has a bad experince previously, most dentists will take the extra time to reassure you and make sure you're as pain free as possible.

There are all sorts of options for pain relief now, but many NHS dentists won't offer anything beyond numbing injections. Private dentists will be able to offer you gas and air and 'twilight sedation' or IV anaesthesia, but obviously, as this is private, its going to cost you.

Thirdly....IF you go to the dentists every 6 months, as I have only just started to do again after 5 years, all of the worries and axieties you're experincing now can be easily avoided, so I strongly suggest you do so after you have this acute phase dealt with!

I am/was petrified of the dentist but I went and had a tooth out the other week. Been putting it off for years.

All I can say is it really isn't as bad as I thought, about the worst it gets feels like when they drill to fill a tooth, just a really mild and very brief stabbing pain.

My tooth was took out in bits because it had broke but it really wasn't bad and the relief afterwards is great.

I can guarantee you I was as scared if not more so than you are. It is so important to get a good dentist though, even if it means paying through the nose for one, it is worth it.

Don't forget, if its infected you will have to go on pills for a week or so before having treatment so at least you know the first visit will not end up in treatment being done.

If those teeth are falling apart, chances are they'll have to come out.

Its going to hurt. Not incredibly painful, more discomfort and annoyance. I've had it done, one of my back teeth had a hole on the tongue side, it rotted away in there, and the next thing a great chunk of it fell off. It had to come out.

Now theres a gap there, I hardly notice it now, but I'll probably get myself off to Poland in a few years to have a nice cheapy tooth put back in.

Just get it done Gray. Whats worse, weeks of slow throbbing pain, or 2-3 days of discomfort and eating on one side of your mouth?

Had a horrible day in work yesterday, everytime i talked i could just feel the pain coming, didnt do all that well. Told myself if the pain was continual through the night i was probably going to stay off work, which wouldnt have done me any favours since ive had about 5months off already.

At work the pain started travelling over my face, it started to go towards my ears first [Fuck!] and then my neck started getting cramp in my neck. Once the day finished, got home, had some food [Avoiding all contact with tooth] then just went to bed.

Was given paracetamol and then 2* 600mg painkillers and a hot water bottle. Happy to say those did the trick regardless. Ended up waking up at about 12 though so it was only temporary. But i just reheated the waterbottle and took another painkiller about 2am, and then that was it - woke up now with no pain, which is fine by me.

Have an appointment for tomorrow morning though, looks like whatever the case i am going to have to pay, but its going to be worthit, going to resign up with my original dentist in October and then take everything monthly

Well, went dentist an hour ago, just got home about 10minutes ago. Interesting.

The tooth is now out, she said the other tooth will need to be taken out as well at a later date [Shall wait on that one...] so she numbed it. It was more effective than that a few years ago, but christ. The noises from when she was going it.

She had this huge sharp thing stabbing away at my tooth, trying to [i think] prise it away from the gum. I kept hearing this cracking noise [and felt it slightly], then she just got the forcepts and took it out.

Come out in one whole tooth kinda, these bastards are bigger than i thought! It didnt fill me with confidence though when she was pulling at the tooth. Her assistant said "Oh! You're getting good at this!" - I could have whinced at that if i could have.

Had sweaty palms at the end of it though

Indeed. This other tooth will have to get looked at [Taken out] though at some point, the dentist was like "Do you want me to book you in for another appointment?" i was like "Nahhh... Dont call us, we'll call you!"

Will be getting registered over the next week again so i will see about it maybe.

Cost £100 to get tooth out though. Eeee... Tell you something as well.. Quite a lot of blood. Scared me sometimes, but it seems like its just clotted stuff, horrible. Hope it stops in time for work in an hour!

Noo. Dont mention that "root canal" stuff. I was curious the other day when i had my toothache, i remember Trem i think it was who mentioned it so i checked it on Wiki.

Fucked if anyone is coming at me ready to do that on me, never . Be over the next few weeks i assume anyway. Dont have many backteeth left i guess, had 3 removed thus far [The other 2 was back when i was young[er]].

Ah well, shall see :p

I've never had a problem with teeth being taken out, the sight of teeth, blood or anything.

But the sounds and the yanking around inside your mouth - the cracking and crunching, the mini-crowbars going inside your mouth to prize the buggers out - those, I can't deal with :|

Having a tooth out is way easier than root canal, it was root canal that put me off dentists in the first place.

What your dentist was doing at the start was softening up the gum around the tooth so its easier to come out, they sort of mash the gum and push it down and stuff.

You need to be careful for a few days now, if the hole doesn't clot you will get dry socket and apparently that is agonising, do not spit any blood out and do not have any fizzy drinks, just have fruit squash. Most importantly rinse your mouth with (as hot as you can stand) salt water, whack lots of salt in there as well, not so much it makes you sick though. The salt water is the best thing for healing imo.

Thats what my mum told to me to do a few days ago when the tooth was still in, at this point i had a fuckload of pills already which wasnt helping.

So she softened up some tablet and told me to dab it into the tooth, worked quite well until it drained out, then the pain returned!

All day today [As in, from 11am to Present time] blood has still been coming out of my mouth, had me worried for a bit - At the start [Shortly after the treatment] i was spitting it out in large quantities.

By the time i got to work i was able to swallow it kinda without much problem, although i did feel slightly sick at that time then, was fucking rank! ONly just got in from work but i'll be swishing some Salt water around after tea and what not, and just keep at it.

Only had one Anadin though, there has been a throbbing pain but it hasnt been all that bad. Was talking to some woman at work and she said "Oh yeah. I was forever sticking my tongue into the holes". That was met by some wry smile

Stop spitting!!! (f'naar)

If you get dry socket you will wish you had had your head removed. Best thing about dry socket is there is nowt you can do you have to wait for it to heal itself.

So stop spitting!!!

if it keeps hemorrhaging for too long id go back to the dentist, or an emergency dentist. it happened to me and she put in some dissolvable material which basically plugged the hole and dissolved as gum grew round it.

Well with over a week gone since having it removed, everything has been fine in relation to pain - Theres no pain and theres no blood.

HOWEVER, i have found that the, what i shall call "gum flap" is actually causing great annoyance. I have not poked/prodded the actual gum-hole with my tongue much, however after a brief inspection i found that this gum-flap is loose.

In essence, im fucking shitting myself incase my tongue accidentally pushes too hard against it, because i dont think this part of the gum will heal [I could be wrong!]. I can feel a slight incision on my gum line, and the bit where my gum flap is feels puffed up / inflamed.

I dont remember having this type of thing the last time i had previous teeth removed, if it was meant to get "stitched" or if it was meant to have been removed fullstop.

But another effect to this is, the tooth NEXT to the tooth which was removed [Next to the flappy-gum] feels looser as well. I have no idea if the damn dentist has inadvertedly loosened it by accident or not, because it had a slight wobble to it when my tongue went near it!

Gah.

The tooth next to it has nothing to lean against anymore, its spent all its life with a buddy to lean on. The gum needs to heal (takes months) and then the loose tooth will be happier.

Stop stressing you big girl, if you still have issues in 2 months time then go back but everything sounds perfectly normal to me.

Ive had so many teeth removed that its not even funny. Just be careful with it and don't eat hard or crumbly food for a while as its a bitch on the wound, rice can be annoying too if youre not careful to chew it on the other side of your mouth.

i had my tooth out 3 months ago, the back widsom one at the bottom, it had a dry socket as i was spitting blood all the way home (30 minutes) the thing would not stop bleeding, even with the packing in, the dentist took the tooth out in one piece, fkin thing was about an inch and a half long, it made a BIG HOLE and the flap of skin that Grays on about was well swollen. 2 weeks later its not healed and ive got this big bulge of something coming through my gum wall, then this white thing appears and pokes its self through my gum under where i had the tooth out.

This was shaved off by the dentist and he told me that my dry socket was worse. I went and got drunk and the pain went away then i was fucking about with my dental stick things and i fucked it up even more.

The white thing coming out of my gum (tooth fragment) finally came out after 3 weeks and after 7 weeks the hole finally closed. the flappy gum bit at the back took another 2 weeks after that to heal properly.

i now look after my teeth like a millitary operation

I have found rice to be the bane for the other side of my mouth [Which currently has the other cracked tooth]. I spent 4 days trying to get a small grain out, because it was so perfectly lodged there mouthwash, brushing etc could not get it done.

However i have over the past few weeks had a few sneezes, and i had a particular big one which make it fly out. Yay.

But because this cracked tooth is on the other side of my mouth, im not yet prepared to actually have it taken out because i havent started eating things on the side the tooth has been removed

Well my teeth are f*cked up, due to medical and psychological reasons that i don't want to discuss in too much detail.

Fear+semi-acid spit for young-years=not good.

Anyway, should get to the dentist.

But, got a near paralyzing fear of it.

Wouldn't mind the "shame" talk id' most likely get, or the pain, but something just kicks in the breaks and i just can't shake it.

I did manage to get to the door last week.

Time for a slight bit of Necromancing!

So, over the past 6 months, i had finally registered with a dentist and been going regularly. Local and cheap and he seems to have been in the game a very long time.

HOWEVER, for some reason i just dont like him. Maybe its just a dentist thing. He seems to have "seen it all" and thus, clearly doesnt have any sympathy if a job gets too painful.

I registered with him 6mth ago, because i had a bit more of a toothache issue. Again, even after having a tooth taken out last year i still wasnt completely over them. I didnt think the tooth was in that bad-a-shape, but what do i know yeah?!

Its always quite stunning when you go to a dentist, and they start counting the teeth/cavity ratio. I was shocked by the initial number that was pulled up - But thats not what "shocked" me by the end of the day. This guy was mega pissed off that i had happened to have come in. I could tell. This is when i started to get anxious again because its not a feeling you want when around a dentist who seemingly isnt happy with you.

Anyway, he started treating the tooth. Note: He did NOT tell me how bad the tooth was, or what treatment he was going to do. I expected just a quick filling. A few seconds later i was on the way to having a fucking HUGE panic attack. My mouth was numbed to fuck, yet i felt something stabbing at the nerve in my gum.

I will tell you now, i have NEVER experienced pain like it in my life, and whats more - He didnt fucking tell me about it, no warning, no nothing. This continued for about 10 minutes and i was in agony. Eventually by the end he told me he had removed the nerve/s under the tooth. The panic attack i was heading too was something similar to that which i had last year when i was at work, it scared me. Plus the fact he was unrelenting on his assault on my gum.

All i could hear was him moaning in the background about how i have set him back on paperwork and what not, its really not something you want to hear because you dont pay attention to it. Afterwards, i was fine, as soon as he took whatever he had off the nerve the pain immediately disapeared. And that continually happened throughout this. AFTERWARDS he told me it was Root Canal - Which i already knew as soon as i felt the stabbing.

A few weeks later i go back to him, i was EXPECTING to have another tooth out [Ala, the one which always got the rice stuck in it!] so i went in all confident that the tooth which had the Root Canal performed on it, was done as dusted - Not anxious!

Then he tells me "No. The Root Canal procedure isnt finished. It will be finished today. What im gonna do is remove the temporary filling, and blast your root canal with air to clean it out". Anxiety come back straight away, i was fucking bricking it. As soon as the air-thing was close to my mouth i clammed up expecting worse pain than last time - It was then decided to save time and just remove the tooth. Sigh of relief right there.

I cant trust dentists anymore. Admittedly, all the treatment he has done has been good to a point where afterwards there is no pain. I was on a weekly visit but now im back on 3mth visits. I will be going back to him next month now. But as the weeks are closing in, i am getting nervous.

I am having sleepless nights thinking about it. As soon as i put my mind at rest, i end up having flashbacks of that root canal. It has really caused some distress with me and i worry for the next time/s i have to go. Specially when i think the dentist [While good?] is somewhat unprofessional at times.

That sucks - I go to a private one, sadly there isnt enough competition to keep them on their toes quite as much as I'd like but my dentist is pretty decent - done a filling for me and was fine.
