You should of stuck this in the hardware forum ;)

Have you checked that the heatsink is properly seated?

depends innit. amd cpus tend to run hot, they require rather heavy duty coolers. what kind of cooler are you running with now? on my 900Mhz tbird I have a big globalwin and that does the job pretty well. on my 1800+XP I have a huge dragonorb that does the job even better although loudly heh.
I don't know much about ati gfx cards but any current card needs at least a cooler on it's grafical processor. some even have heatsinks on their ram tho I personally find that a bit excessive.
you can check your bios to see if it has any readouts on cpu and system temps. some even allow setting of cut-out values causing the bios to suspend or even powerdown the system if it gets too hot. some mobo manufacturers and thirdparty peeps make programs that can monitor your temps from within your os.
another thing I just thought of: make sure your fans _work_ heh. open up your case and look.
before you do anything rash, find out how hot you are. this rebooting of yours may be a case of having wrong firmware somewhere, or a patch you need to apply.

the general idea of adding extra heatsinks is good, but what's even better is to create more air-flow through the case. your psu generally tends to blow _out_ [check that btw -cos it may be blowing hot air into your case] adding an extra fan at the bottom of your case [presuming you have a tower] blowing in may work wonders. good luck.

I second that, the most uber-heatsink in the world is worth smeg-all if you don't have airflow in the case, I always remember reducing my CPU temperature by at least a whole 5 degrees by installing a proper case fan.

overheating yes,

i had a bunch of confusion and dismay on a fbsd box when gcc kept fecking up and the ftpd kept causing kernel panics !

I swopped all the hardware i had spare in and out and all over the place, never thought once about the cpu fan.

You'd never guess what the problem was though
