Basicaly I have a AMD k6-3 450

I wana overclock it

I looked at motherboard manual, switched some jumpers to make it 500....

Turn on PC startup says its at 500, loads windows then

error messages "kernel" and "explorer" ones

i think damb, turn off and switch to 550, and PC nearly blows up from start beeping at me, etc, so i pull out power.

basicaly i am back to 450, and am wondering how to get it to 500, without error msg's if anyone can help please

:)

right

from experiance

IT "MIGHT" run @ 500 if u increase the core voltage, but tbh, the k6's are no hopers for OC'ing, and ya unlikly to get ANY difference in performance with it at 500, caus its slow anyway

Get proper cooling, learn about overclocking or just don't bother as a K6-x aint no quicker @ 1000000MHz anyway.

K6-3's are really sensitive to overclocking (not like the K6-2 300 that I had running @400Mhz back in the day). Your best bet is to try to push the voltage up a bit (CAREFULL! go up only in .1v increments and make sure you have adequate cooling) as frankie said. Otherwise, chuck it and buy a K6-3+ 500

I'll give it ago, tar, but one thing

how do I increase voltage?

:)

With the voltage jumpers :)

Look in your manual for CPU voltage settings... set the jumpers anywhere upto 2.5v according to the manual but ONLY if you have decent CPU cooling. If not, don't bother till your cooling is adequate.

Ive tried with a K6-3 450@500, only way i got any joy was put a peltier (ta Tug) on it, a huge heatsink and crank up the voltage to scary levels.... then it lasted all of 15 mins in windows.
Its not worth bothering mate, u get fuck all performance gain and its unstable as fuck.
If ya wanna play overclocking with intel stuff get a cheap celery or pIII (100Mhz FSB NOT 133 or ya RAM will die b4 u get any where near wot the CPU can take) and a board with massive range of FSB speeds, Abit BE6-2 or BF6 springs to mind. The only problems with these boards is the BX chipset only supports the AGP at 1/1 or 2/3 of ya FSB speed.
ie yer AGP card is getting overclocked at anything over 100Mhz FSB (most cards dont seem to mind though)
Dont play with peltiers unless ya know wot ya doing, u need big heatsinks and big air flow to get shut of the heat created by them.
Then theres the trouble of condensation and ice.
