Could someone explain how this works please? Does my skill in SC affect my chance of overcharge success?

at 801 skill u can overcharge items by 5.5 pts, as long as you use 99% gems
and u can't make the highest tier gems

at 1001 skill u can overcharge items by 5.5 pts, using 2 x 98% gems and 2 x 99% gems
and u can make highest tier gems

Ah, thanks mate thats useful to know.

Is there some kind of formula that lets u work this out? And does going over 1001 SC help in any way?

going over 1001 doesn't matter at all, unless u want to make the gems for trophies.

As for a formula, hmmmm probably is..but i don't know it :)

i use the following rules at 1001 SC and have never failed in over 200 or so items:

5 - 5.5 OC - 2 x 98% 2 x 99%
3-4 OC - 3 x 98% 1 x 99%
1-2 OC - 4 x 98%

u can substitute higher gems (if ur lucky enough to get them), so that ur averages are still the same ...ie lets say for 5.5 oc u get 1 mp gem, you then only need 3 x 98%.

you can do all the neccessary OC's at 801, but i only know you need at least 4 x 99% to be successful.

found out some info on the VN boards which could be useful to all:

From :Libhita

For ‘safe’ OC’s
+5: 1001
+4: 801 (I have found you can do 5 pt OCs at this level using Avg 99% quality gems)
+3: 601
+2: 501
+1: 401

For average quality gems you can use...
1,001+ Spellcrafter
5pt average 98.5
4pt average 98
3pt average 97
2pt average 96
1pt average 96

901+
5pt average 98.75
4pt average 98.5
3pt average 98
2pt average 97
1pt average 96

801+
5pt average 99
4pt average 98.75
3pt average 98.5
2pt average 98
1pt average 97

FROM: KnutMasher

Calculating an overcharge chance:

Base chance:

1 pt overcharge: -10 %
2: -20 %
3: -30 %
4: -50 %
5: -70%

modified by the quality of each gem (per gem):
94-95: +0%
96: +1%
97: +3%
98: +5%
99: +8%
100: +11%

and the quality of the item itself:

94-95: +0%
96: +6%
97: +8%
98: +10%
99: +18%
100: +26%

and finally, the skill level of the spellcrafter him/herself:

50 -45%
100 -40
150 -35
200 -30
250 -25
300 -20
350 -15
400 -10
450 -5
500 0
550 +5
600 +10
650 +15
700 +20
750 +25
800 +30
850 +35
900 +40
950 +45
1000 +50

If you're in the positive region you stand a pretty good chance of making the imbue without blowing up. An 800 skill SC'er can pretty much do a 3pt OC without much consideration of quality due to the (-30%) of the 3pt OC and the (+30%) of the skill level bonus. By accident (wrong gem selection) I've done a few 2 pt OCs on 98 and 97 qual items (LGM SC'er) with nothing better than a 96 qual gem. They didn't always take on the first try, but never blew up.

Oh and never ever ever leave an empty spot on an 5.5 overcharged item. An empty slots counts as a 94% quality gem. You will fail:

Gem1: 99%
Gem2: 99%
Gem3: 99%
Gem4: Empty!(94%)
------
Average: 97.75
