Am bored of coding for a minute, can't think of any other thread to start...

Have been making a game/set of games for a second year, 10 module credit project at uni, finally got 6/10 of them done which is already way way overboard; then I looked at my line count and it kinda dawned on me. Just passed 7000 lines of code for this small module and have had a bit of a slap forehead moment thinking how much too big this scope for a project is. So I had a look at the word count.....22500 in frigging code. 2 1/4 dissertations for something worth the equivalent of just 10% of a dissertation, lol.

On the plus side, I now have my first game which I can call my own and should hopefully get a good grade for this so guess it was worth it, even if it is stupidly oversized.

So then...anyonelse ever gone overboard with a project they enjoy? It's made me realise the importance of picking subject areas which really interest you rather then the easy ones as some people seem to have done.....

Wow Kir, that's a whole lotta code and writing for 10%. Good luck with completing it all.

Not really had a project that grew to big or went on too long due to my actions. Working in Aviation the deadlines are tight and aircraft on ground dont make money. Did a full System Install of an Entertainment/Comms System on a Turkish A340 that was scheduled for 8 weeks and took 20. But that was due to the incompetance of Air France and their sub-contractors rather than anything caused by us. It made front page news in Turkey where they said the project was being miss managed by Turkish Airlines (not correct). We were under massive pressure to finish on a dailly basis working 16 hour days with no weekends. My team were absolutely exhausted when we returned to Dubai/US. Most were given at least a week off.

But I enjoy the work and I like systems integration debugging. Even though I'm supposed to manage, I like to get my hands dirty as often as possible. Nice to enjoy your work even if the pressure is on.

It's a lot/little, depending on the game.

What kind of a game? Lot of stuff that NEEDS that much code? Optimized code yet(redundancy is a problem)? Etc.

This is from a "non-codey guy" point of view.

Codey or non codey alike, it's a fair point; redundancy issues are the same with most projects :)

I've been constantly reviewing the darn thing and cutting it down. Do bare in mind that commenting is also counted in the lines...there is no way I'm gonna trawl through that much counting.

It's a game of battleships, tictactoe, some battlequest thing, a reactions tester, a strength tester (keyboard breaker) and a set of 5 platform games.

I have a few classes which seem rather large for their current job but should any new game be implemented, they'd need to be there for referencing ... i.e. a sound/music player which has options for playing half way through songs etc but it's currently not needed in the game.

I'm currently taking much joy in thinking that this is the final all nighter I'm going to do for this acedemic year :D 8 in just over three weeks has seriously screwed with my head.

edit:Forgot to say I've called it the great gig in the sky :D The final level your character is attacked by Cliff Richards and you kill him with your 'rock' ;) Okay okay, maybe a bit too much but I don't care, you either have a laugh coding or throw yourself out of the nearest window...I made my choice ^^

Would love to "bug test" it for you some day, with that much code for such a project(seems reasonable by the way), there's bound to be quite a few nasty ones :D

Also, you got anything left to implement? Like graphics, menu, options, help etc ;)

The only thing which really got to me is the fact that you can only press one key at once for the character to move. So jump, then run and land on the other side of the platform etc. Got most of it done but wont have all of it done before the hand in; pretty sure I'll be continuing it though past the hand in.

It's my first use of java 2d so it isn't fantastic. Would say it's similar to but below mario standards of course... same sort of concept.

Have kinda taken the piss with the concept a bit but the lecturer seems to have a sense of humour ;)
