I've got about 5 NTL addresses I check, and this happens quite a lot to me too. It does seem to usually clear eventually.

Sometimes I find that even though I can't get in via POP I can get into the webmail interface.

I guess if it never manages to check the 2nd address I'd think about going in via the ntlworld email management pages, and resetting the password on the mailbox - in case I'd somehow flukily mistyped my password twice, or in case it had somehow got corrupted on the server.

I actually use Outlook not Outlook Express. Funny thing is, if I do nothing, it will just eventually start checking the mail for that certain account again, so it seems not so much that my client 'forgets' my password, but rather that the server has thrown a momentary authentication fit.

Tho' I had occasional problems when with BTopenwoe, this has happened pretty ever since I moved to NTL. It gets pretty annoying when you're on BB and have your client set to check fairly frequently, as you end up spending a lot of time canceling requests to re-enter your password.

I guess thinking about it a bit more it almost seems like an NT account locking after a defined number of bad password tries and then unlocking after another predetermined time. I guess my ntlworld username could correspond to some backend user account that keeps getting locked. But equally, still, why?

It's usually only any one of my accounts that gets in this state ... the other's will check mail OK.
Do you really think they would have my multiple email accounts spread accross different servers? I guess it's very possible - we have a 5 server exchange group with staff grouped across the servers by initial letter of first name, so a similar thing could be going on. Just wouldn't expect a big ISP to be running Exchange. I guess you can do the same type of thing with Sendmail or whatever they might be using if not MS tho'.

I always figured that as they gave you a primary account and then the other addresses were secondary & that they would live on the same mail server. Don't really know why I thought that of course.

And maybe it's not even going down, but is underspecced and over utilised and just doesn't respond.

Either that or my client is trying to log the multiple accounts in to quickly ... sometimes if I manually check the account that's giving the grief on it's own, then it goes in.
