OT (ish) WIN98 ICS Problems

Hi people.

Just aquired an additional PC so that my girlfriend and me can play DAOC together instead of fighting over the PC.......

Set up a peer to peer network no problem, ADSL modem working ok everyone happy. Then try to install Internet Connection Sharing..... BIG MISTAKE.

It appears that whenever I try to connect ICS (WIN98SE) the network and/or the ADSL link dies. Only way to correct this is to completely remove and re-install the network cards.

Problem could be related to the fact that the TCPIP network doesnt appear to like dynamic allocation of IP addresses. Static addresses work OK. Currently the two machine are set to the recomended IP addresses for static allocation whilst running ICS, but still no joy.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

ICS is pure evil. I used it for several months with XP, XP/linux and 98 boxes. I had no end of trouble with it regularly just failing for no reason at all and refusing to work again without a full reinstall.

I'd really recommend buying a cheap router if you can afford it Dabs has a nice selection of them and, of course, you get the added benefit of being able to reboot/turn off the ICS server comp without the other losing connectivity.

Regarding your ICS problem, I'm not really sure. I've found that ICS has a tendancy that if one box goes down they all go down with a logfile with very little explanation :/

I've used ICS for years now and have only had 1 or 2 probs that were usualy solved by reinstalling windows but 99.9% of the time its worked perfectly and much better than ne shareing software I've looked at.

I did have same prob I think and afai remember I solved it by uninstalling ICS, dial-up networking from add/remove (not in network props), restarting then adding then again in add/remove. I guess removeing them in network probs misses bits out.

hope this helps
