Right. Gonna fone and order my NTL Cable Modem on monday.
What sort of downloads can i expect and what pings to BW?
Also how long from when i phone and order will it actually be installed?
Ive heard various stories ranging from Pings of 600 and downloads of 5kb on a bad day to someone whose downloads were peaking at 138kb/sec (i actually was there and saw with my own eyes) and who pinged at 35 to BW.
So, what should i expect? Im in the south side of Glasgow if location is a factor.

From reading the ntl newsgroups, Glasgow does seem to have its fair share of problems.
Depending on how far you are from the nearest major "back bone" thingy, you should get anything from a 20+ ping (not very often) and a 70KB download speed, to a 400 ping and pants downloads.

Location does seems to be a large factor in what kind of performance you get :/

If it's anything like here in the US, your ping and d/l speeds will also depend on how many people in your area are using it at once. Broadband/Cable is a shared connection, the more people on it, the slower you go.

Personally, I've hit in excess of 200K per sec and have peaked at around 300Kps d/l. Uploads slam into a fixed 150Kps maximum rate. On average, I see ping times of 50ms to 200ms on bad servers. On BW servers I can usually hit 100ms on good days.

In my state, if MediaOne doesn't offer full 2 way access in a particular neighborhood, they can give you a 1 way SurfBoard. You still need a modem, but your d/l speed is usually hovering between 200 and 300Kps - that's the average!

Thats american Cable tho. In the UK its capped at 512k down and 128k up :/
I think its the Surfboard Modem im getting. Thats the one my mate has. It has built in DHCP which is useful for LAN's :D

I work for ntl: and we have got two cable modem PCs in testing at the moment, hell I set them up!! Anyway the download speed I've had off them is very good. Often quicker than our coporate network :(

Like others have said here sometimes it does suck though.

I'll bench mark them tomorrow.

Mikey out!!

Well I have had a NTL cable modem in Glasgow for a few weeks and heres the story:

Downloads to Barrysworld = 67k sec nearly always
Uploads = 15k sec (damm 128k limiter)
Pings :

CS - 30 to 40

Q3 : 50 ping but with rate 10000, maxpackets 100 and snaps 20. Believe you me its bloody smooth compared to ISDN. Feels like a different game.

Get it. I moved from having ISDN for 3 years to Cable Modem and its well worth having cable modem. Only flaked out on me once in 3 weeks I have had it. It was 400 ping for one night to Barrysworld but to Jolt it was still fine.
