Heres the story...

My mother got a second hand Orange Mobile phone without a SIM card, and used her old Vodafone SIM on the fone..

Now shes giving the fone to me, and I have brought a Orange SIM card. I tried to register the phone but Orange are saying the fone is blacklisted, any ideas?

If it helps, the fone is a Nokia 3310

If a phone is blacklisted, there's every chance it's stolen. Who was it second-handed off?

The ban is prolly applied to the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). This is a number thats unique to that phone.

Dunno if its possible to get the IMEI changed, if it can be done I doubt its legal.

I bet as soon as you walked away from the stall he went to the van and pulled out another one ;)

Yes it is possible to have the IMEI number but you will need to find someone willing to do it.

When I wanted to have a Orange Nokia 7210 unlocked for other sim cards (which I had bought leagaly from someone I work with) they all wanted to see proof of purchase

Cant you just buy a vodafone sim instead of the orange one. I know BT cellnet sell sim cards for £15 or something.

I think the IMEI database is common to all phone networks (even forgien ones)

he very well could have decided to do an insurance scam on it. I.E. 'my phone has been stolen, can I have a new one please' then they black list the old one. He sells it to you, you can use it on any network OTHER than orange, as they dont share blacklists.

IIRC changing the IMEI number is pretty difficult and not a good idea (had a mate who was a bit of a phone freak)

Anyway, looks like you might be stuck with the other networks, at least (if you've managed to use a voda sim in it) it's unlocked.. so that's something..

</pedant>

anyway, the only reason someone would want to use orange is everyday 50....

if ya don't wanna use that, find another network... like one with better reception... orange's atrocious everywhere i go.

Orange have been perfect everywhere I've gone.

Ah, I've just noticed where you live. I never realised Mobile Phone transmitters had reached Wales yet.

(Everyday 50 is the most AIDS infested tarriff you can go on btw)

that would be bcos

it's not my main phone tariff, it's just convenient to have in addition to that one...

vodafone and one2one rock reception wise everywhere around here, so what exactly is orange's malfunction!?

even when i've been in england, orange has had shit reception compared to other phones in the family.

also, could you suggest a more masculine, non-AIDS infected tariff for me plz.

Pay as you Go is pretty AIDS-free in my experience. Then again, I mainly use text messages, so 5 free a day is pretty nice...

How the hell do you have a life sending 500 text messages a day?!!?!?!?

Or any money for that matter seeing as they cost 10p a throw?

Unless my calculations are wrong, that's an average of about one text message every 3 minutes. WHY???

actually

the 500 text message days are in furtherance of what little life i have... arranging to meet up with ppl etc.

as for how i pay for it? with bloody difficulty i assure you.

i get a hefty bill, and i think oh my fucking god what have i done. gotta cut down etc.

and i never do.

and then u realise that all those texts were for a reason, so.

/me shrugs

once i have a regular sex life ima bin my phone :p

the IMEI database is global, enter any IMEI and it will tell you what the phone is, who made it, when it was made and in some cases which network it was made for.

That being said the blacklist database is for whichever network it was blacklisted on - the blacklist database is an extension of the customer databases queried from the BTS by each network, as Orange aren't too keen on sharing customer information with it's competitiors (and the other way around I'm sure) you'll find that a handset blacklisted on one network should work on all of the others.

By the way - an IMEI can be blacklisted for nonpayment, theft, tampering or even if a dodgy sim card is put into it.

As to unlocking you'll generally find that the likes of Nokia and Ericsson service points unlock the phone when they do low-level reflashes - a normal reflash doesn't touch the locks but a low-level flash wipes the lot.

Orange is excellent in some areas (London, Bristol, Birmingham, most other major cities) and total shit in others (where I am now, unfortunately). If you live in London it totally dumps on the other networks. But I guess you just buy whichever network gives you good coverage where you live.

As for your tariff Wolfeh, I'd suggest getting an "all-network" free calls one, and try actually ringing people instead of msging them all day. You'll probably find your bill drops by half at least, given you can get all the information in a 10-message texting spree into a 30 second conversation. I used to send shitloads of text messages, and get £150/month bills. Now I just ring people instead, and my bill rarely exceeds the standard rental + free calls charges.

just a little note for people who text a fair amount:

BT genie, or O2 as I think it's known now, pay as you go gives you 600 free messages a month. Granted, if you're gunna send 500 a day that's little help, but for yer average person that's quite handy. You have to top it up with a tenner every month else you'll get cut off (to stop you exploiting the free messages) but you can use that tenner for calls n stuff obviously.

I've been on this since I left vodaphone about a year ago. I spend a tenner a month on it, send probably about 5-10 texts a day sometimes, and phone people a bit on it.. not a huge amount. In otherwords, it's good if you use it a fair amount. I'd imagine it's shit for people who spend their lives with their ears attached to their phones.

I use the BT Genie/O2 monthly contract, and I'm happy as Larry with it. Vodaphone completely stomped on me, secretly signed me up for an insurance thing I didn't want (and had point blank refused) and it was costing me £80 a month (min). With my new tariff, even with me being an exceeding natterbag, its usually only £25 a month, and I phone my parents for about an hour a week, not to mention Kenny. Free texts make me a happy bunny.

All other phones can burn in hell.

O2 spam my phone with shite & keep asking me if I want to switch to them from Orange, so as far as I'm concerned they can now foad.

yes that was 500.

Utter crock. Assuming you are awake and compos mentis for 16 hours a day, you would need to be sending a new text message *EVERY* 2 mins from the very moment you wake up, to the very moment you sleep. I think not

Also, at 10 pence a message that means your monthly bill (WITHOUT rental and call charges) would be £1500 a month. Again, I hardly think so Captain Embellishment

Perp: 1.) 20-500 per day. If he meant 500 a day then yes, that would be $1500 but for all you know the average could be down under 50 (if that's possible) with 500 on one day and 20-25 on every other day. 2.) SMS chats count as multiple text messages don't they? You could quite easily get over 10 of those in under 5 minutes if you're skilled on the keypad and don't have much to say. Repeat session 50 times throughout the day; five an hour over ten hours, for instance, and it doesn't seem that impossible at all, although that doesn't stop it from being ridiculously far-fetched... just phone'em Wolfy fgs
