I'm moving again and there's a possibility it will be to Northampton. I made a similar thread about Stoke last year and got some pretty helpful responses, so here's round two!

I know it's a well-located town with regards to motorway access etc but what about stuff like cost of living and the price of cheese?

I need to make a decision within the week or it's redundancy for me! Any help muchly appreciated as usual. :)

(I'd be moving from Wolverhampton so as far as I can see anywhere I go will be something of a step up...)

Fairly dull midlands town tbh. Not revolting, but nothing to get excited about. Some lovely countryside around the place though and some v. nice villages and small towns nearby (like Oundle, which is probably where I'd live if I was going to work in Northampton). As you said, very will situated though; Oxford is only 40 minutes away, Silverstone is around the corner (if you're into motorsport). House prices aren't bad but its just about London commutable so expect it to be more than Wolverhampton - check www.propertyfinder.co.uk

Oh, and Alan Moore lives there, so it can't be all bad.

also got a good rugby union side - well worth checking out if you like sports - Carlos Spencer currently on contract with the saints as well.

other than that - what they said above :)

I've lived here all my life, and it's not too shabby. Huge chav culture thing going on in the city centre itself but also a large goth culture to balance it out a little.
Don't go near St. James - pollution levels there are making London look clean.

It's 5 minutes from the M1 and 10 from the A14 so transport couldn't really be easier. Quite a lot to do too. The Wellingborough Road in Northampton itself is pub crawl capital of England - see if you can make it from one end to the other. Very long road and every other building is a pub/bar/club :)

If you're moving here on the long haul and you have a car, you want to live in Northampton itself, check out the Hunsbury area - some nice houses, some nice areas and not too far from everything.

You asked about prices : not too bad, your petrol will be between 87 and 89p a litre, your cheese will be whatever you like from Tesco ;) - renting properties you can expect between £400 and £2000 a month depending on what you want. If you want cheaper you might find some nice little 3 bed places in the towns/villages around the area (Earls Barton, Ecton etc) for around £500 a month.

Anything particular you want to know, just priv msg me or post on here/IRC or something ;)

Why move when its just a quick jaunt up the M6?

Edit*

Or down the M6 for the pedants.

Northampton is pretty good really. I live in Wellingborough which is very near and go there once in a while. I also used to live there. Its a nice and relaxing place really considering the amount of hairdressers about. Some decent clubs, pubs.

I suppose the best thing about it is that its very easy going and close to places that arent such as london. I go to london once a month and do nothing in the meantime apart from work and the girlfriend thing.

My gilfriend is getting a mortgage and im going to try and make her move there.

Dagaffer, Oundle is nice yes but isnt really what id consider close tho my only form of transportation is mah bike :p Oundle is more Kettering/Corby way.

Thank you all for your opinions!

I'll be looking for a one-bed flat - within easy walking distance of the city centre. I'll probably go up there and live out of a hotel for a couple of weeks while I look around.

Oh dear. :(
