opera windows behaviour

can somebody explain how I make opera open new windows in the same way as IE? At the moment, it opens everything in the same window, and doesn't normally let me use the 'back' button for that reason.

What I want is for it to open new windows when the link would normally call for that, if that makes sense?

I take it going into the preferences and going to the windows section and selecting "Open pages in new window" or possible deselecting "Reuse existing page" doesn't help?

Mine does the same I think in that the link opens in the same tab as the page it was on, but on the other hand my 'back' and 'forward' do seem to be working OK.

Have you got an example of a link that does what you want in IE, but not in Opera. What version are you using by the way?

I guess you could see if the 'Typed in addresses' and 'Visited addresses' values, under 'History and Cache' aren't set to 0.

I'm quite in the habit (probably from Opera) of right-clicking on links and choosing the 'Open in new page' (tab) or 'Open in new window' options.

I've just stated using Mozilla Firebird however, and with the 'Tabbrowser extensions' installed it gives you a lot of control over how links are handled.

Hi Tom.

Quige pretty much covers everything. Most of the windows options are in the File > Preferences > Windows area, or the basic options accessible via right-clicking the link(s) in question.

As Quige. also says, the Firebird Tab Extentions (third-party) offer a lot of different options, but Firebird is still early in development, and extentions can't be usually be uninstalled easily at present :(

Kind Regards

I've been pretty impressed with it so far ..hasn't crashed on me or anything yet ... which is more than I could ever say about Opera.
I didn't realise that about the extensions.

I'd had it installed since about 0.5 and hadn't really usedit much as though it had tabs (which I like) I couldn't make it work how i wanted i.e like Opera.

Then I read Davey Winder's column in PC Pro and found out about this extensions business and checked it out again & have been using it as my default browser since. It seems to handle proxy authentication better that Opera too.

I do seem to have problems with some java based applets and so on with it though, and the java installer for it refuses to install!

Well I couldnt get it to behave quite as well as IE, IE always lets me go back if a link opens in the same page, opera wouldnt do it.

Opera = bin.

Oh well, next time you're in the mood for a browser change give mozilla or firebird a go :)

Sounds like it could be a bug, Tom. Are you/were you using one of the beta 7.20 versions? If so, try checking out the very latest build (beta seven, I believe) or try the stable 7.11 release.

If you'd rather not, then Firebird is great standalone browser, even if it is a little buggy, but that's due to it's early age rather than poor coding. Alternatively, Mozilla is a great allround browser too. Or you could even try creations such as MyIE 2, AvantBrowser etc. These all use the IE rendering engine, so you don't gain anything in that respect, but they do add things such as popup blocking, tabbed browsing, customisable skins and other such features.

Kind Regards
