Not sure how I managed this but, erm, I've managed to disable the "change background image" controls in XP (Home Ed.)

It must have been some tweak or something, but I really don't know how to fix it or what it was. I go to the "Desktop" tab the list of wallpapers is greyed out, as is the "Browse" button. I can still mess about with the "Stetch/Tile/Centre" Drop down box, but it doesn't work all the time.

I can change background still using the "Set as Background" button on an image context menu, but with the tiling/stretching broked it's all gone a bit... odd.

Anyone know how/where to reenable the Desktop controls?

Sounds like group policy settings?

Start Run > gpedit.msc

Take a look through there...

Doesn't look like I get that in Home Edition.

On win 2k you could disable people from modfying their backgrounds with the folliwng reg key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\NoDispBackgroundPage

a REG_DWORD with value 1 means you cant select the background tab.

Dunno if this is still the same in XP though....

It's probably something you disabled in 'services'. If you right click on my computer and go to 'manage', you probably need to re-enable something under 'services'.

Thanks Dr. Weasle.

XP Home doesn't have the same key, but in almost the same place (Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/ActiveDesktop)
was "NoChangingWallpaper" set to 1. Set it to 0 and lo, it works again.

Thanks very much.
