One or t'other?

Looking at laptops and I've found a couple relatively cheap and decent spec.

There's the Toshiba Satellite 1410-S102 which is £499 minus VAT or the DELL Inspiron 1100 for £729 (although I'd customise slightly).

Fairly big price jump and the spec's are different, but has anyone had any experience with the Satellite? If someone tells me it sucks (and gives me reason/proof) then I'll probably go for the Dell... advice, pls :d

Hi mank!

I haven't had experience with the Toshiba system, but I do own an Inspiron notebook (not that model, though). After using it for almost a year I can say I absolutely love it. The build quality is amazing, the deal I managed to get meant it was excellent value for money, and since buying it I haven't had a spot of bother with it (well, a little bit of the cover has become chipped, but I'm in the process of sorting that out). I really can't fault it. I also believe Xavier uses a very fancy Inspiron notebook too.

Of course, I'm sure the Toshiba is very good too, but I can certainly recommend Dell. Just taking a quick look at the two systems, the Dell seems the better value of the two (depending on how you configure it), even though it ends up costing more. I guess it comes down to budget, though.

If you have any questions about the Dell notebooks, I'd be happy to (try and) answer them.

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. One word of caution, though, neither system will be all that great for gaming (if that's even an issue?)

You're a legend Jonty. Cheers.

It'll be for school/college work (should I ever go back) and the only game will probably be Champ Man, which should run fine.

hehe, I don't think I really did anything, but your welcome nonetheless :) Dell can do some really good deals, everything from free double memory to free delivery and such, so keep an eye out on the offers and their expiry dates.

Just one thing you should be aware of, because all Dell systems are custom built and then extensively tested, it can take around ten days or so, from what I recall, from you placing your order to it arriving. To most people this isn't a big deal, and it's well worth the wait, but if you're impatient, a bit like myself, then it's best you know now :D Thankfully Dell have a nice order tracking facility so you can see exactly what stage of production/delivery your system is at.

You might want to check out some reviews before making any decisions, but if all Inspirons are half as good as the one I have, then you shouldn't go too far wrong :)

If you have any more questions, just shout :D

Kind Regards

Jonty

Edit ~ As PR. kindly states, the Dell forums do rock, with a mix of knowledgable and helpful users and some Dell employees too

don't bother with a portable mac unless you can afford a powerbook, the ibook is a bag of wank...

and if you're going to buy a powerbook, factor in the upgrade to 512mb immediately, got mine last week and until I upgraded to 512Mb the fecking hourglass wouldn't go away for more than 10 seconds, even with simple stuff like entourage.

i'm slightly disgusted that Apple can sell something so unbalanced...

on the pc notebook front Jonty is right about the Dells, I wub mine dearly (actually I have two) and their service is second to none... though I really wouldn't go for the smelleron... it's a little more to shell out but seriously consider their Inspiron 500M (Centrino) - the Pentium-M kicks ass and you can save £200 instantly by dropping the support package from 3 year international to 1 year RTB.
