lo, finally got meself a nice phat conection after 5 years of modeming it (500k/sec d/ls n 8 pingage... mmmmmm JANET in halls) :) everything works fine, ICQ, file sharing apps, telnet etc. pretty much open connection... except for IRC (and DOS ping for some stupid reason, but I don't care abt that:) ) when I try n connect I get...

[12:42] *** Connecting to irc.b0rk.co.uk (6667)
-
Local host: Tribal Spaceman (147.188.19.21)
-
[12:42] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** Looking up your hostname
-
[12:42] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** Checking Ident
-
[12:42] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** Couldn't look up your hostname
-

Then nowt...
I prolly could make an educated guess why I'm gettin this... but would I be correct in thinking I need to connect via a bnc bouncer ? (I could use open wingates/sox proxies but like quakenet hates em:) )
Sooooo does anyone know an alternate soloution (could just b me being retarded)/has a bouncer they dont mind me using( tribal@barrysworld.com :D)/knows where I can get a fast cheap UK shell account or pref literally just purchase a bnc process thread thingy?

I get the same at work Trib. The firewall on your uni segment connection obviously filters out ident data, and as such the irc server can't confirm your ident (you might notice a little squiggle before your entire hostname, like *** Tribal_Spaceman is ~blahident@hostname.co.uk

If I recall correctly, the squiggle means your ident isn't confirmed/verified. Then again, that trinket of information harks back from my undernet days of 1995

Just let it run its course till the IRC server gives up trying to confirm your ident. It seems you've discovered that anyway ;)
