lo, finally got meself a nice phat conection after 5 years of modeming it (500k/sec d/ls n 8 pingage... mmmmmm JANET in halls) :) everything works fine, ICQ, file sharing apps, telnet etc. pretty much open connection... except for IRC (and DOS ping for some stupid reason, but I don't care abt that:) ) when I try n connect I get...

[12:42] *** Connecting to irc.b0rk.co.uk (6667)
-
Local host: Tribal Spaceman (147.188.19.21)
-
[12:42] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** Looking up your hostname
-
[12:42] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** Checking Ident
-
[12:42] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** Couldn't look up your hostname
-

Then nowt...
I prolly could make an educated guess why I'm gettin this... but would I be correct in thinking I need to connect via a bnc bouncer ? (I could use open wingates/sox proxies but like quakenet hates em:) )
Sooooo does anyone know an alternate soloution (could just b me being retarded)/has a bouncer they dont mind me using( tribal@barrysworld.com :D)/knows where I can get a fast cheap UK shell account or pref literally just purchase a bnc process thread thingy?

Tribal Spaceman.

I get the same thing here at work, I've found the following 2 things usually sort it out.
  1. After the server does that, reconnect to it straight away. Dunno why but this seems to work.
  2. Try using the irc.quakenet.org redirector server, I normally end up on one of the IRC.DK ones and they seem to work fine[/list=1]worth a shot before ya shell out cash anyhow.

thx guys, but...
reconnecting quickly results in the same thing.. and then a throttle:)
irc.quakenet.org (and other .dk servers), same problem... wtf is a hostname anyway, the DNS of my IP? in which case MIRC reckons its "Tribal Spaceman" wheras its halldr41.bham.ac.uk
RAAAAAAAAAAAAA :) soo, bouncers people :)?

erm, weird.... just got out the shower and I'm connected to IRC looks like I just have to leave it 2 mins and the server thinks "fucking bollocks to it I can't b arsed waiting for the hostname" (sorry if thats too technical for yas) then I connect... :)
um thxbye:)

No. It's trying to ident you, but if you don't have an ident server running, or are behind a firewall which restricts ident it'll take a minute or so for you to connect.

I get that with my ADSL for some reason.. one day it works fine, the next it just mysteriously takes forever :(

That's the same as my work connection Trib. It does this:

Code:
[10:29:34] *** Connecting to irc.b0rk.co.uk (8080)
-
Local host: 8034fhgzl997 (10.19.0.111)
-
[10:29:35] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** Looking up your hostname
-
[10:29:35] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** Checking Ident
-
[10:29:35] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** Found your hostname
-

then sits there for about 90 secs, then finally connects. you'll need to increase the connect-retry time in your mIRC settings obviously :)

When it does connect it bleets about:

Code:
[10:30:35] -irc.b0rk.co.uk- *** No ident response
-
